The Zombies of Possum Hollar
A quote from Tom Nichols writing in the Atlantic:
“Trump’s status as a former president has not shielded him from answering for his alleged crimes. The indictment itself is shot through with tension, because Trump is, in fact, a former president and a current leading presidential candidate—which underscores the ghastly reality that no matter how much we learn about this crass sociopath, millions of people voted for him twice and are still hoping that he will return to power in the White House.”
I don’t agree with Nichols very often (and lord only knows he used to call me out on Twitter), but he’s got the right focus here. Thank you Tom, if you are reading this.
Politics is the art of addition. Get more people on your side than your opponents side, and you win. Hair Füror’s base is also his ceiling, and I honestly do not see a way that this indictment (and possible conviction) adds to his numbers. Even in a conservative suburb, where white (ALLEGEDLY) Christian women voted for him en masse in 2016 and again in 2020, I just cannot picture them rallying around him after this. To the degree that there is a middle in this country, I have a hard time picturing that they would rally around a (convicted?) tax cheat and sex fiend.
If there is a sliver of sanity in the Republican Party, I would expect to see someone take advantage of this and run sharply against Trump and MAGA. However, it is highly improbable that there is any sanity left. The institutional right is rallying around Hair Füror in as public a way as possible.
UPDATE 1: the 538 Blog says the most likely impact of the indictment is that nothing changes.

That first picture looks like a scene out of a Grade B mad slasher/zombie invasion movie. I would love to see a digital artist use the photo as the basis for a grotesque, freakzoid image of the rotting undead MAGA horde attacking ‘Murrica.

The GOP will rally behind him. They are not finished with expressing themselves. Finally , the media is paying attention to their feelings. It is a deplorable situation.

I have read, perhaps erroneously, that his actual support is in the low 30 percentile. I am not much concerned if his entire 30-something percent riot. I firmly believe the remaining authorities will be able to deal with them easily. Let them foam in the mouth and get all shouty. They are only a weak fart of cow dung in the air.
