Laissez les bons temps rouler

My Dad coulda used one of these.

I just learned last night that today is (besides being Mardi Gras) Pancakes Tuesday, which has something to do with burning year-old palm fronds for Jeebus.

I’ve never understood the Xristians, but there you have it.

Anyway, I’m totally on Team Pancakes.

It’s also International Pancake Race Day, a race between people in Liberal, KS (yes, there is such a place) and people in Olney, England, in which runners flip pancakes. It’s happening right now (in Liberal, at least):

LIBERAL, Kan. (KSNW) – The International Pancake Day Race, a tradition between Olney, England and Liberal, will take place today.

This is the 74th year of the race in Kansas, but in Olney, England, the Pancake Race tradition dates back nearly 600 years to 1445.

The event kicked off this morning with a pancake breakfast. Following breakfast, the races will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the children. At 11:40 a.m., the men will run the race. Following the men’s race, the International Pancake Day Race will start at 11:55 a.m. with the women in front of the Liberal Memorial Library at 6th and Kansas Avenue.

I had that link on my clipboard-thank you for remembering this! I’m about 220 mi. East of there, but I enjoy watching the clips on the news. It’s such a simple, peaceful thing. Meanwhile, Laissez les bons temps rouler to all!

No problem. When I saw Pancake Day mentioned, I remembered the big race, so I looked it up (I couldn’t remember the details). It looks like Olney won this year. I guess this is a pretty boring state, with the pancake race being a big event.

Well, it is kinda cool, the races being international. Well, it’s cool to southern KS. There are geeky cool things around KS, but you have to find them, or go to a big college town.

Bless you, my son. Welcome to Team Pancakes. As we tell all acolytes, there’s a bit of an aftertaste. Kinda like ashes, actually.

    Pro omine, bomine, domine. Amen.

Also known as Fat Tuesday. Here in the Detroit area, we descend upon the Polish markets to load up on paczikis (basically a ginormous donut filled with all variety of fillings, from fruits to chocolate to all sorts of weird stuff for the truly adventurous). The city of Hamtramck, the Polish area of Detroit, is the epicenter of this invasion. 😋

Correction: it’s “pączkis” (I added an extra “i”). And although they can be compared to jelly donuts, the dough for them is much richer. Just looking at one can make you gain 10 pounds. 😂

I had a Polish friend in middle/high school whose name (BOTH NAMES!) did not have a vowel. I was one of the few kids who could say the last name correctly, but I always loved the first day of a new class watching the teachers try.

Also forgot to mention: they’re pronounced “poonch-keys” (not “pack-zick-keys”). Seems that like most words in the Polish language, the pronunciation has almost nothing to do with the spelling. 😂

Way, way, way back I worked for a company in Eugene Or called Chef Francisco. They made custom foods like soups and pancakes for the airlines and Denny’s and the like. When I first started they only hired part time on call people. So during that period of ‘on call’ I worked in many different areas of the company and one of those areas was the ‘Pancake Line’. The pancake machine you show in the gif is exactly the machine I worked with as a pancake turner. For 8 hours a day and man was that some hot freaking work. I was hired permanently after I accepted the job of ‘Tamale line operator’. That is another story. And another machine.
