Report: Democrats Read Constitution, Again

“Remember Me?”

That pesky ol’ Constitution that the Republicans claim to love (while also simultaneously decreeing it should be torn up, except for the 2nd Amendment and go figure) is getting in the way again:

House Democrats introduce legislation to bar Trump from office under 14th Amendment

A group of 40 House Democrats, led by Rep. David Cicilline (R.I.), introduced legislation on Thursday to bar former President Trump from holding future federal office under the 14th Amendment.

Section 3 of the amendment states that no one who previously took an oath to support the Constitution and engaged in “insurrection or rebellion” shall “hold any office, civil or military, under the United States.”

[snip]

The release states that the bill includes testimony and evidence demonstrating how Trump engaged in the insurrection.

The bill also specifically describes how Trump helped encourage the violence on Jan. 6, tried to intimidate state and federal officials when they did not support his false claims of the election being stolen and refused to denounce the mob that stormed the Capitol for hours during the riot.

“The 14th Amendment makes clear that based on his past behavior, Donald Trump is disqualified from ever holding federal office again and, under Section 5, Congress has the power to pass legislation to implement this prohibition,” Cicilline said.

Well, that would get rid of most of the Republican Party, including would-be Speaker of the House K-Mac (who is really bad at his job) and nutters like Rep. 3-Toes and Bang-Bang Boebert. So this is unlikely to go anywhere, but it is interesting to note for future historians that this was a thing.

Yes, a thing that preceded the end of the constitutional republic…I have no faith that the special prosecutor will actually prosecute any one other than the small fish.

Even if they do ‘get’ TFG…this only opens the way for America’s Orban, Ron DeathSentence.

If the Lawless 9 affirm the insane Confederate States of America Independent State Legislature lunacy…that’s it. It will be little comfort that the New CSA probably not last much longer than the OG CSA, because a competent autocrat will seize power, with their enthusiastic assistance, and at least 40% of the US population will happily fall in line…hell for most of them not getting to cast a meaningful vote will be no different than what they do now, which is simply not cast a vote…

I tend to agree. It’s not farfetched to imagine that the CSA government would have eventually reverted to an imperial monarchy, with the wealthiest plantation families becoming royal houses.

They would have been multiple monarchies, at each others throats within a generation or two. A big factor in the Confederate’s loss in the war was that the central government was exceedingly weak, by design, and every state raised it’s own army.

(also the impetus for the Constitutional Convention in 1789, the original confederation having proved to be unworkable.)

These rules and regulations they speak of only apply to Democrats. Everyone knows that.

I don’t get it. If there is a rule why does congress have to pass a rule?
