The Stupid Coup, Text-by-Text

Tiger Beat on the Potomac (thanks Charlie) gives us the thumbnail sketch on the big blockbuster that Talking Points Memo has:

DEMOCRACY SIREN — Talking Points Memo’s Hunter Walker and colleagues obtained the text messages members of Congress and others sent to MARK MEADOWS in late 2020 and early 2021, which show some of the country’s most powerful figures actively scheming to overturn democracy and keep Trump in power. The texts, which Meadows gave to the House Jan. 6 committee, “offer new insights into how the assault on the election was rooted in deranged internet paranoia and undemocratic ideology. They show Meadows and other high-level Trump allies reveling in wild conspiracy theories, violent rhetoric, and crackpot legal strategies for refusing to certify Joe Biden’s victory.”

TPM describes it thusly:

TPM is kicking off this series with an exclusive story showing that the log includes more than 450 messages with 34 Republican members of Congress. Those texts show varying degrees of involvement by members of Congress, from largely benign expressions of support for Trump to the leading roles played by Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Jody Hice (R-GA), Mo Brooks (R-AL), and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in the plot to reverse Trump’s defeat. We reached out to all these legislators, and will be detailing their roles and responses to our questions in the first installment of the series, which is coming later today.

I think these texts will become instant, individual, blockbuster stories. I am looking forward to reading them AND dreading reading them.

I would think this further evidence of conspiracy, hopefully, outright Treason. And we do have a special somebody looking at the case but I have little hope at this point. We already have evidence of many crimes and yet here he is trying to run for office again. Why does this country love the rich so much?

    I’m mostly dreading it.
These things are not normal, and should be prosecuted. It’s like everything I heard when I was little about why the US needed the atom bomb, and why we did duck and cover, except these people are not faceless Soviet soldiers, they live and work in US government. It sort of makes my head explode, especially as hard as some people’s lives have been made for whistleblowing US government secret stuff.
    Meanwhile.

One of the obvious things about this is that the old US of A and its Democracy that was and is the foundation of their wealth and current power, will no longer exist. That they are so actively involved in beheading the Democracy that gave them everything they have is, well, the words escape me to describe the insanity of it all. If they succeed and install Trump there will no longer be a Democracy. What will Trump and the country be called? If that happens what do they suppose they will be? With no constitution, no governmental rules to work by…and their lives will be at the beck and call of Trump. He will at that point be their judge, jury and by proxy, executioner. What, I wonder, could they be thinking about to be truly under Trump’s thumb forever.

What and where is the payoff for them?
