K-Mac’s Political Machine Hard At Work

Tiger Beat on the Potomac (thanks Charlie!) email thingie pays attention to these details so we don’t have to:

Over the break, Rep. RALPH NORMAN (R-S.C.) became the fifth member to say he’d oppose the California Republican’s bid. Of course, McCarthy has tools at his disposal to try to woo the holdouts: promises of rules changes, plum committee posts, votes on pet projects and bills, plus other favors that only he can dish out.

I would NOT be surprised if K-Mac loses (5 firm HELL NOes is pretty insurmountable, and there are likely more out there who have not made public statements). I have no idea who might win, but I’m sure there is an Iago in there somewhere.

The horse trading could get politically hairy for McCarthy. A group co-led by former Rep. DAVID JOLLY (R-Fla.) is giving POLITICO a first look today at its campaign to brand McCarthy’s dealings with his MAGA-centric flank as a “corrupt bargain” with far-right extremists. (Huddle has the full scoop, out later this morning.)

It is now later this morning, and Huddle (the OTHER email thingie) tells us:

SCOOP: ‘CORRUPT BARGAIN’ SEASON FOR McCARTHY — As House MinorityLeader Kevin McCarthy works to lock down the GOP votes he needs to win the speaker’s gavel in January, he’s getting squeezed from the right on a number of fronts. Andhecanexpect to hear a lot of this phrase: “corrupt bargain.”

Jordain got an exclusive early look at a memo that Facts First USA, a nonprofit group co-chaired by former GOP Rep. David Jolly (Fla.) and Democratic strategist Maria Cardona, will start circulating with allies on Monday. The document previews the group’s plan for the next five weeks and what it wants to see from congressional Democrats.

“Democrats should undertake a concerted messaging campaign over the next 5 weeks through January 3rd to brand McCarthy’s struggling campaign to win the speakership as a ‘corrupt bargain’ he is striking with ultra MAGA extremists in the Republican caucus to attain the 218 votes he needs to secure the job,” writes Facts First President and longtime Democratic activist David Brock.

David Brock is the founder of Media Matters, and started off his career as a Republican rat-eff’er on the slime Hillary beat for the National Review. He knows a thing or two about messaging. Do continue:

What to watch: The Brock-led group is pushing congressional Democrats and the media to shine a spotlight between now and Jan. 3 on any deals McCarthy may make as he tries to secure 218 votes, describing the California Republican’s “corrupt bargain with MAGA” conservatives as empowering them to “run wild with any conspiracy theory investigation or impeachment in exchange for their vote.”

That includes McCarthy’s pledge to restore Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) committees next year after Democrats yanked her assignments following a series of incendiary comments and actions. (Greene wants a seat on the Oversight Committee, which would put her in the middle of the conference’s high-profile investigations, though she’s said she hasn’t been promised one.) Republicans have told POLITICO that they also expect Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) to be added back to the Oversight Committee.

Well, it’s not like it was a secret that K-Mac is stuck between a rock and a rock head here, and corrupt bargain might actually be accurate, but it doesn’t really say much about what the bargain is.

It is as old a politics itself: You gotta dance with them whut brung you.

I don’t understand who the target is for this messaging, and why the pundits seem to think this is so important. Wee the Peeples don’t have a say in this, so is it to the GOP Representatives? They know that this is the time to get their palms greased.

They talk about Marge like they have to woo her vote for McCarthy. Like a pig to the slaughter, she will just follow the herd. She doesn’t need any special incentive. Especially power. Hire the handicapped but not in government.
