Aaron Rupar has an interview with Ron Filipkowski, which is totally fascinating.
This is the passage than gob-smacked me: essentially FL turned red because Republicans from the midwest moved there during Covid:
Demographics. That’s the number one thing. I’m here on the ground. I’m watching what’s happening. And it was the Covid lockdown stuff in the northern states. It was very strict in the midwest and northeast, and Ron DeSantis threw down the welcome mat and said, ‘All you people come down here to the free state of Florida. You can do whatever you want. We have no restrictions.’ So who are the people that appeals to?
It wasn’t liberal Democrats moving down here. It’s basically all MAGA-type Republicans. There was this mass exodus of Republicans to Florida over the last two years from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. So that’s why you saw the registrations flip hugely. It wasn’t because Democrats were switching parties in Florida. That wasn’t happening. It was new people from up north.
And I also believe that’s why Democrats did so well in those states, because Florida’s draining off their Republican voters. And so the bad news for people in Florida is, look, we’re now a red state. And the Democrats are wasting time and money on Florida from this point forward. But that’s also helped the Democratic Party in the midwest. Plus, Charlie Crist wasn’t the greatest candidate in the world.
Of course no one says this, but we’ve speculated before that a lot of Republicans pwned the Libs by not getting vaccinated and shuffling off this moral coil. “Take THAT, Libtards!!1!” last words as the respirator was unplugged might also have something to do with the mid-west becoming less Republican, too.
The whole interview is really great. Highly recommended.
