The Devil Goes Down In Georgia

This might be good news from Georgeduh (emphasis mine):

Georgia midterm voters turned out in record numbers on the first day of early in-person voting, Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said on Tuesday.

More than 131,000 people cast ballots on Monday, the state’s top elections official said, up from roughly 71,000 back in 2018, an 85% increase from the last midterm vote back in 2018. There are more than 7 million active voters on the state rolls, according to the secretary of state’s office.

[I read elsewhere that 11,759 absentee ballots that have already been received.]

Raffensperger, who is up for election this year and effectively overseeing his own contest, said “reports of long lines were minimal” but also acknowledged that “there were some reports of voters waiting in line for more than 30 minutes from a few popular voting locations in metro areas.”

Locations in metro areas is the key clause in that sentence. Here’s some wild speculation, er, educated guesswork: urban areas in Georgia are Democratic and Black, and  all the pictures we saw were of Black people waiting to vote. I’m going out on a limb and going to suggest that Democratic enthusiasm to vote must be high.

All of this is in the face of all the voter suppression that Republicans have machinated in Georgeduh, too. It appears that the new restrictive voting laws did not have the impact Team Coup wanted and that the Democrats (rightly) feared.

The short version of what’s happening: IF the people want to vote, they will find a way.

Have faith, and get out the vote

I’m thinking that a lot more folks than the Skirts are pissed off about the shenanigans going on in our democracy. Beyond time to get out the vote everywhere, and that is the main message from Georgeduh…

republicans seem to fail to realize that restrictive voting laws also apply to republicans. Go figure.
