President Handsome Joe Biden

President Handsome Joe Biden kicked off the midterm election season last night with a very fine speech from Independence Hall in Philadelphia, which by the way is where America’s foundational documents were written: The Declaration of Independence and our Constitution. The location was clearly chosen and as the speech progressed one could not mistaken the symbolism.

Here is the speech and here is the text of the speech, so you can choose your preferred format:

Biden is not a gifted orator, he is not Barack Obama, but his biggest gift is ability to connect with people, his empathy is genuine. He is no lip-biting Bill Clinton. It’s a wonderful speech in which he lays out the stakes: democracy itself is at risk because of the MAGA Republicans and Donald Trump.

The speech was a call-to-arms for anyone, Democrats and Republicans alike, to reject MAGA/Trumpism/Fascism and the continued damage that it has done to the country. President Biden was very careful to avoid calling out all Republicans and was very specific: it’s about MAGA Republicans:

Now, I want to be very clear—very clear up front: Not every Republican, not even the majority of Republicans, are MAGA Republicans. Not every Republican embraces their extreme ideology.

Biden and his speech writers clearly do not want any sound bites pulled out of context to rile up Fox News (and good luck with that). I ran a search on the speech, he cites MAGA Republicans 13 times, he mentions Trump by name three times. I also ran a search of democracy, which has 31 hits, so clearly the stated theme of fighting for the soul of the nation and that democracy itself was the dominant theme.

We will be hearing today from Republicans and their allies in the media that this was a divisive speech, but I think that they will have a hard time getting the soundbites that they crave.

Joe Biden is an old pro at this and there are moments in the speech where you can hear protesters in the background. TFG always had protesters yanked out by security and often called for them to be beaten up (and sometimes they were). Joe Biden was in no danger, don’t worry about that, but he smoothly broke the speech and improvised,

Look, our democracy is imperfect. It always has been.

Notwithstanding those folks you hear on the other side there. They’re entitled to be outrageous. This is a democracy.

See what he did there? Yeah, it was pretty great.

For many years Driftglass used a clever graphic saying, “A nation cannot stand half Fox and half Free.” I think President Handsome Joe Biden said much the same.

More, please.

And already, the MAGAts and their media enablers are rending their garments and tearing their hair out over Handsome Joe’s speech, complaining about “civility” and “he promised to be a uniter, not a divider” and something something gazpacho. Civility is always required of Democrats, while Trumplicans and the GQP can break every rule of civil discourse known to man and they won’t ever get called out for it. It’s sickening.

It’s amazing that, for once, the captive media is talking about what we want to talk about. See, attacking your opponent actually works. Maybe we could do that every once in a decade? Or more, if it works.

Main beef: “extreme” MAGA Republicans. They’re all extreme. Look at them honestly – how many Rs will quit their party when elections get stolen by MAGA rioters, Secretaries of State and/or members of Congress? They’re almost all “extreme” MAGAts. The tide will turn when every R is covered in the stench, and not a minute before. Last night was still fish slapping, but with a much larger sardine.

    • This. There are all sorts of Political Knowers Of Things in punditland bemoaning how he tarred all Republicans with the same brush.

Yeah just just the ones with all the microphones and political power and such.

The party ran Liz Cheney out of office over insufficient loyalty to Dear Leader. Multiple republican Congress members have quit rather than face the wrath of the mob.

All the NeverTrumpers are now pariahs with the base which remains as rabid and crazy as ever.

This country is NEVER getting back to the halcyon days of ‘Tip-n-Ronnie sharing a beer’ bipartisan comity.

To be a Republican today means you’re either a MAGA or complicit in their treason.

There are a couple of Republican congressmen who have quit in disgust with their former party. But, yeah, most of the ones that quit are spending more time with their families and their security systems.

Well damnation!!! That was one hell of a speech. Biden may not be a gifted orator, but I was impressed with him calling out the Maggats for their perfidy, while defending our Constitution and the rule of law. Good job Mr. President…

TG, you left off my favorite line in the whole speech: “… good manners is nothing they’ve ever suffered from.”
