Maybe AG Garland is Moving After All?

Action shot of Merrick Garland growing moss

Well, this article in the W$J is interesting (behind the firewall, duh):

Justice Department Steps Up Jan. 6 Probe of Those in Trump’s Orbit; DOJ commits more resources to pursue evidence of criminal involvement as House hearings reveal activities of Trump and his circle before and during Capitol attack

WASHINGTON—The Justice Department is adding prosecutors and resources to its investigation into the actions of former President Donald Trump’s allies to overturn the 2020 election, according to people familiar with the matter, as the related congressional hearings have turbocharged interest in Mr. Trump’s own role in that effort.

A Justice Department team focusing on elements of the investigation beyond the violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 , has in recent weeks been given more personnel, office space and an expanded mandate, the people said.

“The ramping up of resources is usually an indication that prosecutors are casting a broader net,” said Robert Mintz, a former federal prosecutor. “The House committee hearings have undoubtedly ratcheted up the pressure on federal prosecutors to broaden their own investigation to include the testimony that has emerged.”

Top Justice Department leaders and prosecutors on the case have said they aren’t taking cues from the congressional inquiry and its widely televised hearings, stressing that their investigation is operating separately.

But the two investigations at times appear to be following similar tracks. People familiar with the department’s probe have said criminal subpoenas have tended to closely follow requests issued by the committee and revealed publicly.

For example, federal investigators searched the home of Jeffrey Clark. a former Justice Department official in the Trump administration, one day before his alleged actions in support of Mr. Trump’s efforts were the subject of a congressional committee hearing . Mr. Clark has denied wrongdoing.

The article goes on to say that the DOJ really, Really, REALLY wants the transcripts the the J6C has, and has a section in the middle about how startled they were by Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony that asserted Hair Füror knew his mob was armed. The implication here is enormous about his intentions.

As Rep. Adam Schiff famously said,

“I have been a part of many congressional investigations that have been contemporaneous with Department of Justice investigations but it is unprecedented for Congress to be so far out ahead of the Justice Department in a complex investigation.”

I know I must come across as flakey between despair at Garland and positive news that the DOJ is moving after all. But it is the lack of speed at the DOJ that really has me alarmed. If Lord Damp Nut throws his hat in the ring, bringing charges will be seen as inherently political in a James Comey fashion and that asshat will always have his Hillary Clinton investigation tied around his neck, which is a good thing.

Also, Garland is trying to repair the damage to the institution from Bill Barr politicizing of the Mueller report and at the same time, the DOJ is confronted with the greatest political crime in US history. Overthrowing the gubmint is by definition a political crime, Garland is going to have to decide between saving the DOJ or saving democracy.

Save the democracy first. There will be no point in saving the DOJ if democracy goes down. Except for making it an arm of the police state, of course.

    • Agreed on all points above, particularly Roket.

Keep in mind that “more” resources can also mean “some” resources if nothing is being done. If he was really interested in de-politicizing his office, how about releasing the Mueller Report in full? Let’s take the politics out of that, and move forward with the rest of the crime spree.

I don’t think the cries of “politics” will do nearly the damage that concerns some of us. I read an AP headline that mentioned a 1/6 committee member stated that Trump announcing will not hinder anyone’s investigations. Fingers crossed because even some Trumpers around here are disgusted and want prosecution. The committee has done a good job with its publicized hearings.
