Sen. Joe Manchin Is A Colossal Jerk, Part Infinity

Joe Manchin: “It’s all about me, Me, ME!”

The trash panda of the Senate, Joe Manchin has once again run out the clock and again proved that he is a colossal jerk. Tiger Beat on the Potomac (thanks Charlie!) email thingie wins the morning with the deets (emphasis theirs):

SIREN — Late Thursday night, Sen. JOE MANCHIN effectively killed any chance of major climate-related provisions making their way into Democrats’ reconciliation package. The West Virginian told party leaders that “he would not support an economic package that contains new spending on climate change or includes new tax increases targeting wealthy Americans or corporations,” WaPo’s Tony Romm and Jeff Stein were first to report, “marking a massive setback for party lawmakers who had hoped to advance a central element of their agenda before the midterm elections this fall.”

What else he said: “Manchin told Democratic leaders he was open to changing federal laws that might lower prescription drugs costs for seniors… And the West Virginia moderate expressed support … for extended subsidies that will help keep health insurance costs down for millions of Americans for the next two years…”

NYT: “The West Virginia Democrat’s decision dealt a crushing blow to President [JOE] BIDEN’s domestic agenda, effectively ruling out action on anything beyond prescription drug pricing and health care subsidies.”

WaPo’s Jeff Stein: “Worth recapping just how much has fallen out [of a possible reconciliation deal] since this all started: Universal pre-k, child care, public housing, paid family leave, dental, vision care for seniors, free community college, Child Tax Credit, climate plans & a lot of other stuff I can’t even remember now.”

POLITICO: “His move leaves a slim health-care focused bill as the only option for Democrats who have long hoped for far more expansive legislation. … [It] sparked deep frustrations from progressives, particularly those who saw Democrats’ control of Congress and the White House as a long-sought opportunity to rein in carbon emissions.

Regardless of how important the policy itself is/was, it’s a total jerk move to mislead your colleagues to invest their time/effort into kowtowing to you for multiple weeks/months, and then to say “Ha-ha, I punk’ed you again!”

We give the last word:

Rep. JARED HUFFMAN (D-Calif.): “It’s important that every young person, every activist, the majorities of this country who are demanding climate action understand very clearly this is not the Democrats. … This is one man named Joe Manchin. When it comes to the most important existential issue of our time, this man is a wrecking ball.”

A last gasp from the coal industry. It’s really crappy that a pollution-oriented industry such as coal can have such a stranglehold on our government. The southern influence is bad enough but coal? Their time is so long gone, except in the minds of a few well-paid influencers.
So much dead weight in our government. We need a serious rearranging of the chairs.

A bit of hope. Use caution. Hope is notoriously tricksy.

I don’t think it’s just coal, but the whole fossil fuel industry that has a stranglehold. To do something serious about climate change, most of their assets have to stay in the ground. The GOP would obviously do nothing about climate change, but I don’t think the Democrats are ready to do much. Something is better than nothing, and there’s still hope, but I’m not optimistic. One thing we need to do is cooperate with other major countries, and obviously we’re not doing that with respect to China and Russia. Biden thinks it’s more important that we dominate (or destroy) them. And that’s the other existential issue: nuclear war. This could happen as a result of our proxy war with Russia, or if we get into a war with China. But the weapons makers also have a stranglehold on the government. Didn’t every Democrat vote in favor of increasing the already huge military budget? The US military is also a huge emitter of greenhouse gases. So I think we’re screwed, especially young people.

Who believes this? Please tell them I have a large piece of waterfront property in south-western Florida for sale. Cheap.

What’s really embarrassing is that dim leaders (looking at you joe, kamala and chuck…) have seen this shitty behavior before from manchin only to look desperate and foolish when manchin withdrew supportfor many other pieces of needed legislation. No one would fault handsome joe if he would finally use the bully pulpit and threaten withdrawal of funds from that shithole aka West Virginia.

  7. He is said to support extended subsidies but is against raising any taxes on the wealthy or rolling back any of the tRump tax money give away. So where does he think the money needed will come from? It is not going to be much of a subsidy and the money will have to come from the already overtaxed lower incomes. Just another ploy by Manchin and his right wing ilk to protect the profit of the upper class while pretending to throw crumbs to the unimportant unwashed masses. IMO Hugs
