“Oh, gross,” said the fish
Even America’s fish are on drugs:
(CNN)Bonefish off the coast of Florida have tested positive for a cocktail of pharmaceutical drugs, including anti-depressants and blood pressure medications, according to a new study.
…Researchers took blood and tissue samples from 93 bonefish in Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys since 2018, when the study started. They found each bonefish had an average of seven pharmaceuticals present, including blood pressure medications, antidepressants, prostate treatment medications, antibiotics and pain relievers, according to the release. One fish had a total of 17 different pharmaceuticals in its tissues.
They didn’t have a co-pay.
All kidding aside: medical waste and pollution are serious problems. I don’t know if people eat bonefish, but you should be cautious if you do, that’s a soup of interactions to contend with, and it’s likely in other fish in the same waters.
We are killing the planet.
Fish with low blood pressure and an absence of depression will be better equipped to handle this.

Not just medical concoctions from the various pharmacies, but Covid is also present. It comes from the feces of infected persons, so the marine life have to deal with Covid as well. As an aside, It was Oregon State University that pioneered the procedure…

They are finally going to start monitoring the city wastewater stream here for Covid, to get a sense of community transmission. The University’s been doing that since they re-opened the residence halls at the UA since they reopened them

Waste Water Treatment Plants aren’t designed to remove medications from the water. You’ll probably get the same results from fish from major rivers and any lake that has a WWTP that dumps into it.

In a lot of cases, they’re not so much dumping them as ‘minimally processing them’ then dumping them. You know, like beer…
