  2. My poor (grammar nazi) wife once had the misfortune to work for someone who incessantly misused apostrophes and greengrocers quotes. Excuse me, I mean greengrocers “Quote’s”

    (seriously virtually every paragraph had multiple “important” “word’s” quoted…. )

    That’s standard among European news outlets. There’s nothing sinister implied by the use of quotes here.

        I see it on British sites also. They tend to use quotes in headlines whenever they are attributing even single word to a source.

      I did not know that.
      French site (where the fascist candidate just gained points since the last election) and the source was a Ukrainian commander.
      Maybe I should check out a few other “French” and “British” news sites, just for the “context”.
      (Scare quotes are fun!)
