Opinions Differ: January 6

Lobbyist arrives from Corporate America

When they tell you who they are, believe them the first time:

TNR Poll: Americans Agree Democracy Is Doomed, but Not About Why

Our exclusive survey reveals that a majority of Republicans believe the January 6 insurrection was an “act of patriotism.”

We’ll cut to the chase. Republicans are split 42—57% between whether the January 6 attack was an “insurrection” or an “act of patriotism.” To ease your mind, we will let you know that the Democrats went 88—12%.

Republicans also shockingly think that democracy  is about individual liberties rather than majority rule.

The theme of 2 Americas is strong in this poll, the conclusion before they get to the numbers:

If the ideal is a world in which neither party feels democracy is under siege, these warlike postures represent a grim finding. But if we accept the reality that Republicans view Democrats as a mortal threat, it’s pretty unavoidably incumbent upon Democrats to reciprocate.

These liberties, of course, pertain only to a very limited number of individuals.

    • “Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:

There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect. ”

      They’re openly, nakedly fascist now.

A grim reminder: it was only seven years between Hitler staging the Beer Hall putsch to ascending to the Chancellorship, a year later the first concentration camps were opened and only nine years after that Wannsee conference was held and they started murdering millions of people on an industrial scale.

We’re on track to compress that timeline significantly. Josef Goebbels only had newspapers and radio. Our modern Goebbels have Twitter’s, Facebook’s and YouTube’s glorious ‘engagement algorithms’.

(and Dog save us if Elon buys Twitter. If you think it’s toxic now, that toxicity will be like polite debate compared to the gaping hellmouth of hate and calls to violence it will turn into.

We’ll make the Rwandan genocide look like high-school bullying in comparison; and it will propagate world-wide. WWIII may look more like global internecine civil war than anything else.

Also, what is it with these Confederate flags they carry around? It is disrespectful. That was a real thing. A lot of people died. We probably will never forget. To see these people using this war is not good .
