In Praise of Heroes

Unlikely superhero

I want to take a moment to praise the people of Ukraine and their president.

President Zelensky could’ve  fled or gone into hiding in a bunker —like a common Trump during a Black Lives Matter protest— but instead he has stood up and leaned into leading his people. His courage is contagious and his people are very lucky to have the right person at the helm at right moment.

History has a funny way of doing that: Zelensky is a former comedic reality teevee star (and let that sink in for a moment, it’s delicious) and is leading the most mis-matched defense against an encroaching nuclear superpower and for now the Ukrainians are winning. Sometimes History calls the most unlikely people in the most unlikely moments. President Zelensky is just a man, and yet he’s managed to rally pretty much the entire world to his side. And of course Zelensky is lucky to be leading the very courageous people of Ukraine (who hand sunflower seeds to Russians telling them to take them to their graves,  or telling the warships to go fuck themselves).

In spite of what we learned from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you cannot train or prepare for these moments; you are thrust into them and you are either the hero or a footnote. Clio, the Muse of History, has done it again and she has found the heroes who are not going to let the monster win.

Well said Tengrain! He gave a hint of who he was when he did not play along with TFG’s Hunter Biden scheme. I couldn’t agree more, he is a hero the whole world needs.

  7. Our fearless leaders flee the country when the wind picks up, Ukraine’s stays put as bombs rain down around them. Zelensky is the world’s leader where it matters.

After four+ years of Trump, it is a real relief to have a person like Zelensky take over the TV screen and be front and center on the world stage. You can feel a sea change happening all over the world at this moment. Are we as a species going to finally start giving these sniveling two bit tin pot dictators like Trump, Putin and the rest, the political boot. They really don’t fit into this age of modern communication technology. “You can’t stop the beat.”

In spite of the ongoing horror and destruction of war, this may well be the high mark of the 21st century because of the continuing courage and actions of the Ukrainian people and Zelensky.
