Floriduh and Disney Destroy Their Brands

Floriduh Gov. Ron DeSantis is taking no prisoners in the LGBTQ culture war and so his press secretary Christan Pushaw is accusing opponents of his “Don’t Say Gay” bill of being, well, pedophiles:

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ press secretary, Christina Pushaw, tweeted accusations that people who oppose a sex education bill working its way through the Legislature are “groomers” or those who would not denounce “groomers” — references to pedophilia and people who help “groom” children for pedophiles and other abusers…

…Pushaw provided the pedophilia inferences from the Governor’s Office first on Friday night.

“The bill that liberals inaccurately call ‘Don’t Say Gay’ would be more accurately described as Anti-Grooming Bill,” Pushaw tweeted.

She followed that up with: “If you’re against the anti-Grooming bill, you are probably a groomer or at least you don’t denounce the grooming of 4- to 8-year-old children. Silence is complicity. This is how it works, Democrats, and I didn’t make the rules.”

And that’s a pretty steep hill to climb. Family-friendly Florida vacations just became a non-starter. But maybe at the theme park

Disney has been taking heat in recent weeks for declining to release a statement about the bill and for donating money to statewide elected officials who supported the bill. Chapek addressed both issues in his memo, saying that the company’s new chief corporate affairs officer, Geoff Morrell, would be “reassessing our advocacy strategies around the world — including political giving — as he begins to integrate the communications, public policy, government relations and CSR teams.” (He also noted that the company has supported politicians who have “taken positions on both sides of the legislation.”)

As for the decision not to release a statement, he told staff, “I do not want anyone to mistake a lack of a statement for a lack of support.”

“As we have seen time and again, corporate statements do very little to change outcomes or minds,” Chapek added. “Instead, they are often weaponized by one side or the other to further divide and inflame. Simply put, they can be counterproductive and undermine more effective ways to achieve change.”

So I guess that the Jiminey Cricket isn’t singing “makes no difference who you are” any more and Pinocchio is never going to be the boy he was meant to be.

Amazing how quickly these assholes can wreck a brand, innit?
