Were They Kosher?


Gonna guess half-sours. Those things could kill a man with deliciousness.

  1. oh damn, that reminds me of the 2nd Abe deli in NY…they charged a lot for their pastrami sandwiches but they had buckets of pickles on the table, fresh, half, and full sour.

      OMDog, I’m drooling. I was weaned with half-done sour pickles. When I’d go to the grocery store with Mom, we’d both start drooling as we walked down the pickle aisle. The aisle with pickles.

        Yup, they are my favorite too. Growing up in Oakland, we had some really good Jewish Delis, and I would start in whining to my Dad to get extra pickles on the side.

        (They are surprisingly easy to make, BTW. I make them nearly weekly during cucumber season, but they are best fresh.)

    What’s your recipe, TG? I made some for the first time last summer with cukes and dill and grape leaves and garlic from my garden. Made them like I make sauerkraut, in a gallon crock. Fermented in brine. It was so hot that they were fizzing after three days! Oh man. Fizzy half-dones. Just like the barrel pickles of my yute, at Bilkers kosher grocery. Showed pictures of them to my brothers who all started drooling. Good pickles will do that.

    On the one hand, food is scarce there and it’s sad that any was wasted. On the other hand, good eye and arm Grany. She pitched a shut-out. One hit, no runs, no errors, game over, Ukraine wins.
