Exhibit A: Useful Idiot
The WaPo reports that the Russian Invasion of Ukraine has started:
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees ordering military forces into two separatist regions of Ukraine for “peacekeeping” purposes as Moscow recognized the breakaway regions’ independence Monday.
Putin signed a decree recognizing the areas — a move that Russia could use to justify an attack in those locations — and an agreement of cooperation with the heads of the two regions: Denis Pushilin of the Donetsk People’s Republic and Leonid Pasechnik of the Luhansk People’s Republic. The separatists do not control the entirety of their regions, and it was not clear Monday evening whether a military incursion could occur.
The formal recognition prompted a chorus of condemnation from Western leaders, with some vowing sanctions.
It might sound bloodless, but this would be like if Russia invaded Possum Hollar in southern Jeebusland. Most of us wouldn’t miss ’em, and in fact some of us might be glad to see the Confederacy gone, but it would still be invading a sovereign nation.
Let the sanctions begin!
Russia just took a large chunk of a sovereign country while claiming it was never a country of its own but always a part of Russia. Ukraine has no choice but to fight back. Somehow. And if they don’t, Putin will keep taking more and more chunks until he gets what he wants. The US has announced that Biden is implementing sanctions for those regions. This will show if the western world will allow countries to violate borders if they have nuclear weapons, or if the world will force a show down over it.

Forcing a showdown is also problematic..cf: those nuclear weapons…
But hell, he completely got away with taking Crimea (and Ukraines largest port!) why not go for more?

“This business will get out of control, and we’ll be lucky to live through it.” Wish it wasn’t true, but all sides have extensive nuclear stockpiles. It only takes one mistake, one miscalculation…

I don’t see this going well for Putin, it’s going to be Afghanistan 2.0, but with an enemy population that can better engage in infiltration/sabotage. The terrain is not as defensible, but the partisans are better armed. Plus, what’s to prevent the Chechens and other hostile populations from lashing out a Russia while the army is bogged down.
To me, it looks like Putin’s hunger for power exceeded his wiliness.

I don’t know much about this. I think it will end badly. I have only met a few Ukrainian people, and they are all refugees.

Fucker Carlson should just move to Russia along with all the other Putin lovers in the Republican party since they all have a man crush on Putin as well. In the 1940-1950’s McCarthy type hearing would have had all these people in jail or executed for suspicions of collaborating with the enemy.
