Fight Back, Dems, Is The Message

Will the Dims get rolled again?

Der Tiger Beat auf dem Potomac has a piece up about the certain doom Team Blue will face in 2022, and oddly hints at how to fight it.

Yup, it’s the GOP Culture Wars, again:

GOP culture war attacks ‘alarmingly potent,’ DCCC warns

Democrats’ own research shows that some battleground voters think the party is “preachy,” “judgmental” and “focused on culture wars,” according to documents obtained by POLITICO.

Preachy, judgmental, and focused on culture wars sounds like a Thanksgiving trip home to me, but whatevs.

And the party’s House campaign arm had a stark warning for Democrats: Unless they more forcefully confront the GOP’s “alarmingly potent” culture war attacks, from critical race theory to defunding the police, they risk losing significant ground to Republicans in the midterms.

That’s the hint right there: “forcefully confront the GOP’s “alarmingly potent” culture war attacks” which sadly is usually what the Dims run-away from. You know, when they go low, we go high rhetoric, which has lost us House seats since before I was born.

No, what seems to work according to the focus group is that when we go high we bring snipers with us for a better shot:

…If Democrats don’t answer Republican hits, the party operatives warned, the GOP’s lead on the generic ballot balloons to 14 points from 4 points — a dismal prediction for Democrats when the GOP only needs to win five seats to seize back the majority. But when voters heard a Democratic response to that hit, Republicans’ edge narrowed back down to 6 points, giving candidates more of a fighting chance, especially since those numbers don’t factor in Democrats going on the offensive.

Of course all of this is a generic Democrat running against a generic Republican, and in practice it will be a real Democrat versus a real troglodyte, er,  Republican and a lot can change right there. But the message is clear: voters want a Democrat with some fight  in ’em. You know, to hit back and hard:

The solution does not lie in policy proposals, the pollsters found, because voters are not generally opposed to Democratic policies. “Rather, Democrats need to demonstrate they fully understand and care about stressors in people’s lives” and focus on the issues “without stoking divisive cultural debates,” one of the slides said…

I cringe thinking about Bill Clinton feeling my pain, but that seems to be effective. It’s instructive that Big Dawg is the only Democrat in the last half-century to clear 370 electoral votes, and he did it twice. But I interrupted:

…This cycle, however, Democratic officials are working to arm their incumbents with what they believe are the most solid defense to the Republican attacks. Rather than delivering a counterpunch or pivoting away from the issue, Democrats are urged to “correct the record” because “changing the subject risks confirming suspicions.

And there’s sort of an example,

The data showed that Democrats could mostly regain the ground lost to Republicans if they offered a strong rebuttal to the political hits. When faced with a “defund the police” attack, for instance, the presenters encouraged Democrats to reiterate their support for police. And on immigration, they said Democrats should deny support for “open borders or amnesty,” and talk about their efforts to keep the border safe.

Note that we’ve long said that defund the police is the right policy (fully fund other public services and quit militarizing the police), and a terrible way to phrase it. Possum Hollar and even the suburbs hear it as, Fire the Police.

Summarizing the party’s midterm problems bluntly, the presentation notes that voters think Democrats “are not making good use of their majority.”

And thanks a lot, Manchinema.

  1. I have been arguing with right wing cult members on Disqus. One thing they understand is to look strong. They don’t get lost in the weeds; they don’t do nuance. They yell and scream at the top of their lungs no matter how wrong they are, and they insist they are correct no matter what you throw at them. The never give an inch even if you flat out prove something to them, they just shift the argument. If you ask them to explain something they go on an attack that normally has nothing to do with the subject being discussed. Right now everything is how Hillary is a master criminal who orchestrated the entire Russia thing and is a major crime boss while Bill Clinton gave North Korea nuclear tech and secretly help them build nuke bombs. One guy told me he had proof Hillary was a mob crime boss because she left all those bodies in her wake yet was never charged. To him that proved she was guilty. And he stated it as an out right undeniable fact. Oh and yesterday it was Putin did not respect Biden because he is weak but Putin was afraid of tRump because tRump is an alpha male. SMH

    • They truly live in an alternate reality. I’ve run into the same thing. I have no clue how to actually deal with this, because when half the country is entirely consumed by a total delusion about what reality is I don’t see how that can end well at all.

They are absolutely conditioned to a 1984 level groupthink. Today we’re at war with Oceania, and we have always been at war with Oceania, along with our long-time allies Eastasia.

Tomorrow, when told differently by Fox, they will insist with absolute and total conviction, that we have ALWAYS been at war with Eastasia with our faithful long-time ally Oceania.

So true! This is exactly my experience from the Obama years. That’s when I gave up even trying to reason with them.
I just call them liars to their faces. brucedesertrat is right, they are delusional and in need of mental help.

They may be delusional and in need of help- but helping them is secondary to my right to live my life. These assholes want to run the whole show- and their way means that my life and the lives of the people I love are worthless. They will fuck the planet and everyone on it in pursuit of their delusions. They will other everyone that does not look and think like them. They will destroy us all.

Me, too. I don’t have enough moments left in my life to spend doing that! Indeed they need mental help, and I am unqualified to provide that.

    • That’s classic abuser tactics. I stopped engaging with those people because it just strokes their ego to be able to “own the libs” with theses stupid statements … there’s nothing anyone of any sense can say in response.

Like when you deal with an abusive partner, you have to walk away & stay away. There’s no way you’re going to win. The only winning there is in your own peace of mind.

While the GOP is firmly focused on mundane, practical kitchen table dialogue like: preachy, judgemental culture war stuff.

I swear, is being clubbed repeatedly on the head with a 3-pound sledge until a certain level of drooling, braindamaged idiocy a requirement for working for Politico, or is it just those people end up there?

Thanks. Now find a Democrat, any Democrat, who will do it. Time is running out. The first primary is two weeks away.

Being a nihilist asshole works really well, until someone attacks you for being a nihilist asshole. They’ve got the last 42 years to defend, and they can’t do it if someone steps up and fights them.
