The Stupid Coup

H/T Scissorhead Skinny-D
Those 59 people who filed the fake electoral vote certificates might have a few regrets:
WASHINGTON ― Dozens of local and state Republican leaders who showed their loyalty to Donald Trump by casting fake electoral votes for him a year ago may now face prison time in return for that devotion.
Because as the House select committee investigating the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, starts to look into the origins of the scheme to send “alternate” ballots to Congress from states narrowly won by Joe Biden, the 59 ersatz Trump electors who claimed to be “duly elected and qualified” could face federal charges ranging from election fraud to mail fraud, in addition to a range of state-level charges.
It is axiomatic: Everything Trump Touches Dies. Throw the book at ’em, DOJ. Because if you don’t, they will try it again.
They are like the velociraptors in Jurassic Park, rattling all the door knobs until they find the one that opens.
They’re not clever girls…

Yeah, I was going to post the 30 second clip with that quote, but it was too brutal for my tastes. The problem, as I see it, is these people think they’re being clever by pursuing this course of action, but are truly incapable of understanding the consequences of their actions. In plain language, they wouldn’t understand clever even if it bit them on their asses, and yeah, the legal system is going to bite them exactly there…

One hopes although our MAGA AG will NEVER bring state charges against the ones here from AZ (and we have TWO fake slates!)

At least now we know that it takes at least a year to bring charges against well-meaning republicans. I’m wondering how long it would have taken if a Democrat even thought about doing something like this?

Well first, Dems tend not to be traitors. Second, and to your point, because Reps do tend along those lines, rules and proper procedures have no meaning. So yeah, there would be many behind bars already in that wildly hypothetical scenario.
It’s hard not to fantasize about some middle ground where the wheels of justice move at a reasonable pace, but we do not live in that sort of democracy – and as a result, in a democracy at all for much longer.

They believed it when TFG said he’d pay the legal bills?
