UPDATED: About Last Night…

If at first you don’t succeed, yadda-yadda-yadda:

“The year-long Democratic push for federal voting rights legislation neared a futile end Wednesday night, after Senate Republicans blocked an elections bill for the fifth time in six months and Democrats appeared unable to unite their caucus behind a plan to rewrite the Senate’s rules and pass it anyway.

The final clash, which has been brewing since Democrats won congressional majorities a year ago as Republican legislatures in 19 states embarked on a campaign to roll back election access, began with an evening vote to close debate on a sprawling voting rights bill.

That vote, at the Senate’s traditional 60-vote margin for legislation, failed on a 51-49 vote.

And let’s note that 60 is NOT the traditional margin for legislation, that is the margin for overcoming a filibuster. It might only seem traditional because amply be-chinned Mitch McConnell’s Republicans have blockaded all legislation except tax cuts.

Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema pounded the last nail in the coffin of Democrats’ voting-rights push, and blessed the GOP’s assault on democracy. They’ve vandalized democracy and they cannot explain why they did it.

However, a nice reaction from Sinema’s would-be primary opponent:

Oooh, and now some fall-out from Wee the Peeples

Anyway, per the arcane and arbitrary Senate rules only someone on the winning side can bring a vote before the Senate again, and so by changing his vote to the “winning” side, Chuck Schumer reserves the right to resume this “debate.”  Thus the 51-49 vote.

And of course our Failed Political Press ™ was all over this in their usual dishonest way:
