I had a Golden when I was a kid. She would occasionally try to make her mean face, but whenever she curled her lips back to show teeth it would cause her to sneeze and ruin the whole effect.

I was raised by German Shepards (the dogs, not the sheep people). There never any question about their mean faces whether it involved dogs or man. It was always wise to cross the street when they were in front yard, which they often were. I’m fairly certain that no person or loose dog ever suffered from bites, but the potential was there. They were serious dogs…

We had a golden retriever named Kayleigh. We got him from our grandparents when they could no longer care for him, he was 2 yrs old then. We brought him home and the 2nd or 3rd day, he greeted us at the door with this dog’s “mean face” and it shook us a little to see all his teeth. But we quickly figured out it was him SMILING at us! He did that all his long life, sweetling that he was.
