President Handsome Joe Biden has extended the pause on student loan payments. We know that 27 million people above 18 (i.e. most of ’em are eligible voters) will hopefully remember his help on Election Day. And god love ’em: graduating into a pandemic is not a great way to launch.
While it is true that the President can postpone payment unilaterally, it is not true that he can cancel the debt; that said Democrats could craft legislation that would do that but it would come with a predictable reaction from Possum Hollar who would see it as elites helping elites.
Of course, Possum Hollar ain’t gonna vote for no damn socialism no matter how much it may help them, so this likely will be a non-issue in the final calculation. And who knows? Maybe some of the debt is held by their own kids?
Anyway, these student debt holders will not have to make any loan payments until May 1, 2022, at which time President Biden can do it again, or maybe another solution will appear, like this solid advice from a super-genius:
