Axios’ morning email thingie includes this No D’uh news:
Gentle Readers, prepare yourselves for a shock: there is a place where Black Americans and Republicans agree, it seems:
Republicans and Black Americans make up two disproportionately high segments of the unvaccinated population. But the survey found they’re managing that decision in dramatically different ways.
- Black Americans reported much higher levels of mask use, social distancing and trust in the federal government, regardless of their vaccination status.
- Republicans were far less likely to wear masks, and more likely to say they have returned to “normal” pre-COVID life.
I think Black Americans have legitimate, historical reasons not to trust the government a lot; Republicans not so much. Not trusting the gubmint is more like a litmus test of Republican-Libertarian orthodoxy.
Ipsos pollster and SVP Chris Jackson told us: “The people who remain unvaccinated have almost no trust in the government. … It doesn’t really matter what Biden says. They don’t believe anything you’re saying.”
And then in what must certainly be making MAGA heads explode:
Former President Donald Trump pushed back on Candace Owens during a recent interview when the conservative commentator appeared to be undermining the efficacy of the Covid-19 vaccines to hurt President Joe Bidenpolitically…
“I came up with a vaccine with three vaccines,” Trump said. “All are very, very good. Came up with three of them in less than nine months. It was supposed to take five to 12 years.”
Yeah, Sparky put down the fish tank cleaner smoothie, pulled the lightbulb out of his ass, and put on the lab coat. Whatevs.
Owens interjected, “yet more people have died under COVID this year.” She then pivoted to hit the current administration, saying “By the way, under Joe Biden, then under you and more people took the vaccine this year. So people are questioning how …”
Trump interrupted “oh no, the vaccine work, but some people aren’t the ones. The ones who get very sick and go to the hospital are the ones that don’t take the vaccine. But it’s still their choice. And if you take the vaccine, you’re protected.”
“Look, the results of the vaccine are very good, and if you do get it, it’s a very minor form,” he continued. “People aren’t dying when they take the vaccine.”
Hair Füror will take any credit, any praise, any time.
Let’s quickly detour to CNN who tells us:
“A North Carolina police chief has been placed on unpaid leave and probation for telling officers about a ‘clinic’ that would issue them a Covid-19 vaccination card without actually receiving the shot.”
And now , we learn that the SCOTUS said it would decide on a fast-track basis whether President Biden can make hospitals and other large employers require their workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19. They can take away bodily autonomy from women, but potentially declare that no one can take-away autonomy for vaccines. This should be a fun one to watch them spin.
So, yeah: Republicans don’t trust the gubmint that they built. Totally makes sense, actually.
