Floriduh Republicans Cancel Culture The University of Florida

“It’s Floriduh, Jake”

Here’s some fascist eff’ery from Floriduh’s Republican Gubnor Ron DeSantis —the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination, you know, if Hair Füror doesn’t run:

UF researchers felt pressure to destroy COVID-19 data, not criticize DeSantis, report says

Fear of upsetting state officials is pervasive among faculty at the University of Florida, to the point that race-related references have been edited out of course materials and researchers felt pressure to destroy COVID-19 data, according to a report released Monday by a Faculty Senate committee.

The six-person panel was convened three weeks ago to investigate academic freedom issues after the university decided to bar three political science professors from testifying in a lawsuit against the state.

The panel was convened three weeks ago after the university barred three professors from testifying in a lawsuit to overturn the state’s new voter-suppression law, but it received a metric ton of input about other allegations:

  • Researchers working on a Trump-Virus study felt “external pressure to destroy” data and “barriers to accessing and analyzing” data in a timely manner.
  • University employees were told “not to criticize the Governor of Florida or UF policies related to COVID-19 in media interactions.”
  • Faculty were required to change websites and course materials, and ensure that the words “critical” and “race” didn’t appear in the same sentence or document.

This is about as authoritarian as you can get, and if anyone wants to talk about Cancel Culture on Campus, point them to this Miami Herals story. Cancel Culture is totally coming from the Republicans at the top.

When they say the people who go to university are being indoctrinated, I always ask them what they think they’re doing to people in their pseudo-Christian evangelical churches.

I would ask that the Southeast corner of the state be excised and reattached to the mainland, but I can’t imagine a place south of the Mason-Dixon line the would make one iota’s difference.
