Here’s A Heapin’ Spoonful of BS

Our Failed Political Press ™

Depends upon how the media frame it

It’s all doom Doom DOOM for the Democrats!

If the upcoming midterm elections were held today, 51 percent of voters said they would vote for Republican congressional candidates, a new poll released Sunday has found.

According to the latest ABC News/Washington Post survey, which asked respondents who they’d support in a race for U.S. House of Representatives, 41 percent of voters said they’d back the Democratic candidate in their district.

It’s really too bad that no where in the article does it mention that US Representatives are only elected by districts. Show us district-by-district.

It doesn’t matter what a national poll says, that’s not how our elections work. Also: this is a year away. Come’on, media: do better.

  1. Hello TG. Great point. Some elections really are about local matters and feelings. Hugs

Given the way voting groups are geographically distributed (Democrats heavily concentrated in dense urban areas) and gerrymandering, I’d bet that district-by-district polling almost always comes out a lot worse for Democrats that this kind of national poll does.

Yes, the poll is not directly relevant in the sense that the election is a year away. But if the Democrats have serious problems — and this suggests that they do — it’s better to have a year’s advance warning to identify and fix those problems.

There’s also the matter of a poll’s past track record of predictive value. If memory serves, national polls of voting intentions for House seats do actually have a good track record of predicting how the actual election will turn out — though obviously that applies to polls taken much closer to the election date than a year in advance.

There’s also the problem that there are currently no races or challenge/candidates for the vast number of districts. When there is actually someone running, well, wake me up. Until then this is all pot-stirring.

Republicans threw an autopsy into the trash. They don’t care about the future. In about a year’s time, we will learn the fate of Steve Bannon and his cohorts along with a plethora of dirt on the GQP from the 1/6 Commission. It’s a matter of timing and planning ahead.

I was talking with a neighbor recently and he said “I used to be a democrat, but I like Trump better than Biden” I asked “why?” and…silence…and I asked “what has Trump done that was better than Biden?” and “well, Biden left all those soldiers in Afghanistan” and I said “but military withdrawals always leave some soldiers behind” and…silence…that was the end of the discussion. I could tell that that was the end of his “Fox news feed” for the day.

That’s the way it is in the nether regions these days.
