Moral Panic Today: Books in Texas

America’s Lab for Bad Policy —The Gret Stet of Texas— is jumping into the book banning bidness:

“The fact that pornographic material that serves no educational purpose has been made available to students in Texas public schools is a clear violation of the law,” Abbott wrote in a Wednesday letter, directing the Texas Education Agency to “investigate any criminal activity in our public schools involving the availability of pornography” to minors and to refer cases for prosecution.

And by porn, Abbott means LGBTQ fictional characters.

Among the books cited as possibly pornographic are “Lawn Boy,” which refers to oral sex between boys, and “Losing the Girl,” which features LGBTQ characters.

“Refers to” carries a lot of weight for Abbott’s feverish mind. There’s a lot of dialog, as  you can imagine, that might refer to oral sex. And anyway, Gov. Abbott isn’t having any of it, so to speak, and neither can the students. What if LGBTQ kids find out that they are not alone, that what they are thinking/feeling is thought/felt by others? What if they learn that life gets better, you know, once you get the HELL outta Libertarian Texas where women cannot have abortions, masks cannot be required in public spaces, and LGBTQ people cannot exist, not even in fiction.

When book banning comes up, one must ask oneself is it the solution or the problem? CLUE: it’s the problem. It’s always the problem.

I’m pretty sure they will publish a detailed list of banned books and share it with the rest of the nation. We can call it a book list for Woke Parents.

Mom escaped TX in 1957. She was pretty happy about it and I am eternally grateful. I’ve been all over that mess from Amarillo to Orange (A finalist in the most horrible place in America competition), Houston, Austin, Ft. Worth, The Big Thicket.
