Report: Sinclair Down, Few Notice

News at 11.

Sinclair News (Motto: “We’re the Clear Channel of Fox Newses!”), local providers of politburo approved centralized opinion, was hit by a ransomware attack:

(CNN Business)Sinclair Broadcast Group (SBGI), one of the largest TV station operators in the US, said Monday that a ransomware incident is disrupting some of its office and operational networks.

At an early afternoon town hall meeting held via Zoom, staffers were told that the ripple effects are widespread and the full ramifications are not yet known.

But not to worry, they are bravely soldiering ahead:

“Still no email, phones, file video or graphics,” a reporter said Monday.
“They expect us to keep broadcasting as if we aren’t down,” a reporter at a different station said…

Some of the impacts of the ransomware attack are visible to viewers. At WBFF in Baltimore, Sinclair’s flagship station, Monday’s midday newscasts aired without any of the usual graphics or accompaniments. Some of the usually live segments were clearly pretaped.

How could the viewers tell the difference? Is there a difference?

  2. My wife and I cut the cable TV years ago, and went to Hulu+, Netflix, and Britbox, and of course the ROKU. We use an analog TV antenna for all the local stations, whose availability is entirely dependent on the weather. We frequently watch a CBS affiliate, apparently a Sinclair subsidiary or something, for the evening “news” local and then national. The local news is ten of thirty for two runs at the weather, then there’s another ten minutes for discussion of the Green Bay Packers, the Milwaukee Brewers, and local high school sports. The remaining ten minutes left for “news” is frequently about the closing of some beloved small business or a sighting of a coyote within city limits. Much later we tune in for Colbert’s monologue before moving on to subscription services until bedtime in the wee hours. We frequently make jokes about how there’s been no reports of incoming ICBM’s or space alien invasions, so it’s all good.
