Not to make light of it, but I’m at wit’s-end with my trumper mother, 87 year old proud deplorable watches Fux all day, got Jesus not afraid to die. Not gonna’ get the vax and no amount of pickup/boat/helicopter jokes is gonna’ fix that. I don’t have to long too far (well, ok, Texas is a couple thousand miles away) to look to find bare-footed barely literate rubes sprawled drooling Pavlovianly across a “couch” the backseat out of a 1969 Chevy Suburban drunk as a skunk on the Ambien, Prozac, Viagra and Jesus on teevee Kool-Aid. This propaganda thing with the drugs and the tube and the NAZI mind-washing techniques is no joke, it’s real, and it works.

My immune suppressed son and his wife are having similar issues with his Ex filling his 10 year old daughter’s head with anti-vax crap. They are in FL. The Ex and her boyfriend refuse to get vaxxed. My 10 yo grand is being told vax doesn’t work. Masks don’t work. And she is confused. The son doesn’t know what to do. They try to sooth the child explaining that the vax does work and masks are important- but damn- how to combat that drivel daily? It’s a fucking mess.

Man – in FL you probably wouldn’t want to try to get this documented as child abuse to limit visitations. The judge lives there, too, has too high a chance of agreeing with the ex.
But – maybe teach the -year old about math and the scientific method? Or maybe about marketing? “You know how the picture on the package looks sooooo good but then you try it and it’s OK at best? Marketing!”
I am full of probably useless suggestions today! I’d better take a break. Best of luck to you and your son and family.

Sounds a lot like my mom, who left the planet for Jebbus last September. She was a die hard Trumper to the very end, and an a committed (or noncommitted if you will) Evangelical as well. But she made it to 97, although her last few years she suffered a lot. Wouldn’t see a doctor because Jebbus even though it was obvious she had some deep rooted mental issues. But she didn’t die of Covid, but she went fast in a matter of hours praying out loud all the time. The hospital where she died wouldn’t let me inside to see her, and no I’m not at all resentful, I understand why…

Ten Bears, beckymaenot, Jimmy T– I’m so sorry for your situations. I don’t know what to say, other than how sad and tragic, how effective cultural and religio-brainwashing are. How are we, as humans, ever going to get out of this nasty rotting stew?

I run into this bullshit at work. Did you know that Postal Service employees don’t have to have the vaccine? Yeah, me neither. She won’t say where she gets that, just talks to someone else if I’m not properly aghast and accepting of her shocking news.
I haven’t tried this, because most everyone who I am personally associated with already knows that it’s propaganda, but I’ve read that direct arguing is useless. Some have reportedly had better luck with engaging on the “what leads you to believe this” sort of a deal. I guess it implies that you are not just ignoring their drivel and it gives you a wedge to start an actual conversation rather than your relatives just burrowing farther into their defenses.
However, I suspect you’d have better luck by cutting the access to Fox and Farther Right media. Is there any way of getting into their Parental Controls and blacklisting Fox, et al? Maybe get them involved in some kind of home care, out of the generosity of your heart, where they don’t have enough change left over to pay for the direct mainline of propaganda? Maybe hire a secret humanist caretaker to pop some happiness and sunshine onto the telly instead of all that doom and rage? Maybe documentaries about ants and how Rupert Murdoch and the Moonies took over major chunks of American media?
