Flags will be at half-mast today at MPS’ World Headquarters

Guys, the Mike from Crooks and Liars’ Mike’s Blog Roundup, has died. He was 76.

You might already know Mike Finnegan as a musician who worked extensively with Joe Cocker, but he also sessioned with many other world-class musicians: Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and even Jimi Hendrix.

It’s also personal: Mike noticed this little blog and featured it often enough at the Roundup, and now and again asked me to fill in for him while he was on the road with Joe Cocker; I was filling for him when he retired from the Roundup.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Mike boosted MPS from the unknown into the merely obscure, and I am forever grateful to have been one of his invisible friends. He will be missed.

    Sorry for you loss TG…
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

    Guys,

Thanks, first off. But more importantly this isn’t about me, it’s about Mike.

MPS has had several Angels: my blog father Morse at the long-gone Media Needle, WaterTiger at long-gone Dependable Renegade, Mike, and of course Scissorhead Bluegal who is now a front-pager at C&L. MPS has been very lucky over the years.

This is why I try to pay forward my debt to Mike when I have the honor to do Mike’s Blog Roundup at Crooks and Liars: I try really hard to give a hand-up to other small blogs doing good work. It is also why I am so gobsmacked with what Infidel753 and Burr Deming do week after week at their blogs.

    Rgds,

    TG

Jon Amato’s tribute to him at C&L was beautiful, Mike’s generosity had a ripple effect on all of us, and his goodness was contagious.
