So yesterday, President Handsome Joe Biden FINALLY came out swinging at Republicans:
So hear me clearly: There is an unfolding assault taking place in America today—an attempt to suppress and subvert the right to vote in fair and free elections, an assault on democracy, an assault on liberty, an assault on who we are—who we are as Americans.
For, make no mistake, bullies and merchants of fear and peddlers of lies are threatening the very foundation of our country.
It gives me no pleasure to say this. I never thought in my entire career I’d ever have to say it. But I swore an oath to you, to God—to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. And that’s an oath that forms a sacred trust to defend America against all threats both foreign and domestic. (Applause.)
The assault on free and fair elections is just such a threat, literally. I’ve said it before: We’re are facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War. That’s not hyperbole. Since the Civil War. The Confederates back then never breached the Capitol as insurrectionists did on January the 6th.
As good Scissorheads know, about 50 Democratic state lawmakers from Texaslovakia (America’s Lab for Bad Policy) are in D.C. to lobby for action, having fled Austin to block yet another GOP-backed elections bill, to deny Texas’ Republicans the quorum required for a vote. President Handsome Joe has no plans to meet the lawmakers, who risk arrest in Texas, but he “praised their courage.”
It’s totally great that Handsome Joe is finally describing the Republicans as a threat to democracy, but then he urged Congress to pass legislation that has no chance of passing until he follows it up with a call for the Senate to reform the eff’ing filibuster and maybe does some LBJ-style arm twisting on Manchin and Sinema, and well nothing much can happen with the rest of his agenda. (I’m assuming behind the scenes that is already happening?)
And in a weird coinkydink, the GOP are getting ready to have Lucy yank away the football:
Campaigning for the midterms is going to be on us sooner than we think, and I suppose having anything bipartisan is nice, it is not really essential. Accomplishments count, not the eff’ing process. During the 4th Reich, the Dems gave an earnest 100-slide Powerpoint presentation, with charts, to explain exactly what the Billions for Billionaires tax cut would do and Republicans passed the Billions for Billionaires Bill on their own and bragged about it. Bipartisanship is meaningless to the voters. It is bullshit to everyone except Our Failed Political Press ™ .
