We’re In A Heap o’ Trouble

Let the record show that the first Democrats to act on protecting our democracy were in the Texas Lege. As we noted, Texas Democrats walked out of the Texas House moments before the end of the legislative session, to cock  block one of the most extreme Coup Klux Klan initiated Jim Crow bills in the country. (Seriously, this thing would allow them to throw out election results that they didn’t like.)

This is the Texas I love:

“Breaking quorum is about the equivalent of crawling on our knees begging the president and the United States Congress to give us the For the People Act and give us the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.” –Texas state Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer

Related: More than 100 scholars of democracy (university professors gotta be professors) issued a statement:

“We, the undersigned, are scholars of democracy who have watched the recent deterioration of U.S. elections and liberal democracy with growing alarm. Specifically, we have watched with deep concern as Republican-led state legislatures across the country have in recent months proposed or implemented what we consider radical changes to core electoral procedures in response to unproven and intentionally destructive allegations of a stolen election. Collectively, these initiatives are transforming several states into political systems that no longer meet the minimum conditions for free and fair elections. Hence, our entire democracy is now at risk.”

We submit into evidence that a coup is still in play and we need to act NOW:

  • Hair Füror, wandering around his bunker ranting that he will be reinstalled in August to sycophants and random guests at weddings he crashes at Merde-a-Lardo
  • General Flynn’s thinly disguised call for a coup at a eff’ing Q-Spriracy conference
  • Assorted Jim Crow laws all over the country poppin’ up like mushrooms after a rain.

President Handsome Joe Biden announced that Vice President Kamala Harris will lead the administration’s push for voting protections, calling the Coup Klux Klan’s Jim Crow bills an “unprecedented assault on our democracy.”

Texas Democrats won’t be able to block this thing forever as Gov. Abbott can call for a special session, soon.

This is a red alert, Scissorheads: everything depends upon getting Manchin and Sinema  to reach the same conclusion, end the filibuster and get voting reforms passed while we still can.

These flashes of unity and determined resistance, its reassuringly beautiful hope.

  2. That letter reminds me of Richard Clarke’s testimony to the 9/11 Commission “running around with my hair on fire” and “all the lights were blinking red”
