‘The Game Is Afoot!’ – Happy Sherlock Holmes Day

Guys, By Hook or By Book tells us that today is Sherlock Holmes Day! Go check it out, and enjoy the parody video!

Fun Fact: the copyright for the Sherlock Holmes books is now public domain, anyone can publish an edition, BUT the character of Holmes is still privately owned; you cannot —without permission— write your own extension of the character.

I’m going to make a rare recommendation: Graham Moore’s The Sherlockian is an excellent read if you like the Sherlock books, and is an example of how a clever author can get around the limitations of the copyright.

  3. Fight me: Benedict Cumberbach is the best TV/Cinema Holmes. Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone are good, but they were playing Holmes; not being Holmes.

(although he’s in a huge company…Beyond the familiar, like Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett, there are John Cleese (twice!), Peter O’Toole, Charlton Heston (!!!???)., Milton Berle(also !!!???) and Peter Cushing.

Not to mention the many people who have played him on stage or radio, including Orson Welles and Leonard Nimoy…
