GOP: $1M Is The Cost Of Free Speech in MI, Pay Up

In First Amendment news, Michigan GQP is working really hard to remove freedom of the press, and maybe free speech:

Michigan GOP lawmaker floats bill to register, fine ‘fact checkers’

Lansing — A Michigan lawmaker who’s been at the center of efforts to question the 2020 election introduced a bill Tuesday that would require “fact checkers” to register with the state.

I cannot see any problem with that, nosireebob!

The “Fact Checker Registration Act” defines a fact checker as someone who publishes in print or online in Michigan, is paid by a fact-checking organization and is a member of the International Fact Check Network [International Fact-Checking Network — TG]…

The bill requires qualifying fact checkers to file proof of a $1 million fidelity bond with the Secretary of State’s office, which will be tasked with developing the “form and manner of registration and filing.”

For $1M Ameros, free speech! Only Republicans could come up with an idea this stupid.

The International Fact-Checking Network is a division of the Poynter Institute whose headquarters are apparently in (ahem) Florida.

Fortunately, “Big Gretch” Whitmer will never allow this bill to become law (and it would be struck down by the courts faster than you can say “major First Amendment violation” if it ever did), but the fact that it was even introduced at all shows just how far the GQP has fallen down the rabbit hole of fascism. If they ever regain power nationally, which is a real possibility in 2022 thanks to GQP shenanigans and the delusional, short-sighted stupidity of DINOs like Manchin, I truly believe that we’ll be done as a country; “effed in the dark” would look like a pleasant alternative by comparison.

OK, so who’s going to check the guys who check the fact-checkers? Let me guess. Unelected Officials? Their logic is dizzying.
