Republicans, Explained

Republicans get to work!

And as long as we are talkin’ ’bout History, this piece in Politico Mag tries to solve the mystery of The Prime Directive of Wingnuttia: Own the Libs:

“…Gamers borrowed the term from the nascent world of 1990s computer hacking, using it to describe their conquered opponents: “owned.” To “own the libs” does not require victory so much as a commitment to infuriating, flummoxing or otherwise distressing liberals with one’s awesomely uncompromising conservatism. And its pop-cultural roots and clipped snarkiness are perfectly aligned with a party that sees pouring fuel on the culture wars’ fire as its best shot at surviving an era of Democratic control.

“…In one sense, this is the natural outgrowth of the Trump era. Inasmuch as there was a coherent belief that explained his agenda, it was lib-owning — whether that meant hobbling NATO, declining to disavow the QAnon conspiracy theory, floating the prospect of a fifth head on Mt. Rushmore (his, naturally), or using federal resources to combat the New York Times’ “1619 Project.”

“But in a post-Trump America, to “own the libs” is less an identifiable act or set of policy goals than an ethos, a way of life, even a civic religion.”

That last ‘graph is the nut. It’s all they got.

  1. Natural outgrowth of wtf? The “own the libs” caco-ethos has been around since at least Newtie’s Contract on America, if not Tricky Dick. This is putting the dung before the ass.

Reagan planted the seeds. Bush 43 watched them bloom. TFG 45/19/47, whatever, cut them and put them in a vase on the table where they will die. Probably.

The thing about “owning” in the hackersense is that it is tangible. Evidence, footprints, a ransom demand of the hack is readily available. “Owning the libs” is intangible, not something that can be readily seen and at that seen only through the lens of their eyes.

OK, if you hold it out to arm’s length and at a 32° pitch and 69° yaw and wear your nerd-glasses from high school just so when the moon is in the 7th power and Mercury in heat.

Also, excuse. If your plan to own the world by making the presidency your personal monarchy goes up in flames, what do you say about it? “I meant to do that, it was all to own the libs.” It’s an outgrowth of the response to getting caught in the cookie jar – “It was the cat”.
It doesn’t have to make sense because it’s a cult. Which is how it became a Qult.
