Our Failed Political Press
Tiger Beat on the Potomac’s morning email thingie breathlessly asks:
Nope. See Headlines, Betteridge’s Law Of.
MITCH’S BIG DECISION — If one were to conduct a poll of congressional reporters and Capitol Hill denizens, we’d guess at least 90% would say there’s no way Senate Minority Leader MITCH MCCONNELL will ever vote to convict DONALD TRUMP.
But indulge us for a moment to play out the extremely unlikely scenario that he does.
McConnell clearly sees Trump as a danger to the Republican Party. The two haven’t spoken since December, and McConnell has accused Trump of “provoking” the Capitol siege. McConnell is also 78, and there’s chatter already underway about whether he’ll retire in 2026 rather than face reelection at age 84.
So, could he be viewing this impeachment vote as a legacy-defining moment?
Amply be-chinned Mitch McConnell has already voted TWICE to stop the impeachment trial. McConnell is going to do whatever it takes to remain in power, and that means he’s going to vote to acquit. There’s no grand worry about his legacy (as they imply), he knows what his legacy is; he’s not an “institutionalist” as they keep trying to claim: he laid waste to the Senate and destroyed its credibility in the name of getting GQP judges appointed.
Why does Politico think that McConnell gives a merde about America when all of his actions across his entire career brings us to the point of armed insurrection to overthrow the country? It’s ludicrous.
Politico must really think that their readers are dummies.
