Dump Trump and the GOP
Politico’s morning email thingie has a really interesting development in the ITMFA story: the hired help HAS HAD IT! –
STAFF SPEAK: A group of House Democratic staffers are circulating a letter that they plan to send to the upper chamber, urging senators to vote to convict Trump and bar him from ever holding office, according to a copy obtained by your Huddle host. (H/t to CNN’s Kristin Wilson, who first reported the text of the letter.)
“As employees of the U.S. House of Representatives, we don’t have a vote on whether to convict Donald J. Trump for his role in inciting the violent attack at the Capitol, but our Senators do,” they write. “And for our sake, and the sake of the country, we ask that they vote to convict the former president and bar him from ever holding office again.”
The staffers are just beginning to circulate it. They sent it Wednesday around the Hill and more than 100 staffers are putting their names on it, according to one of the staffers who helped draft the letter, who told me: “Staffers deserve to be heard.”
Today, these staffers say they will be reaching out to Republican offices to see if any want to sign it as well. And they want it to be bipartisan because both sides were impacted by the attack.
The bottom line: This is not typical of staffers to publicly insert themselves in a charged political debate, but their decision to do so further reflects just how completely unprecedented these times are.
Now imagine that you are employed by a Representative who gets your letter and decides to backstab you, anyway. Imagine what the work will be like. It’s not an exaggeration to assume that some staff will walk away from their offices. And if you’ve ever worked in a congressional office (even as a volunteer), you would know that these Representatives depend on the staffers, many of whom have been there longer and know the ways of the deep state world better than the rep.
This could be real leverage!
Sort of like the crew of the Titanic saying “Eff this! I’m not going down in this thing so that you can get your
emails sortedcoffees served hot. You won’t even buy me atacticallife vest. Do you want to have to do it yourself?!”LikeLiked by 2 people
I hate that because we had a shitty president who, with the help of his lame-ass party, broke all of the rules and laws and regulations that had been respected and obeyed for two hundred years, we have to rely on staffers to speak up to do the right thing.
He broke the system. He ruined the most basic tenets of our democracy, That alone should bar him from ever holding any public office again. But here we are, relying on others to stand up
for the rest of us. Good lord.

The hero of the story is always Sam Gamgee. It was true in TLOTR and it is true here.
Always look for the helpers, as Mr. Rogers said.

Hello TG. This is a great reminder that the terrorist action at the capital impacted / effected a lot more people than the elected officials. The stories of staff hiding under tables in dark rooms with barricaded doors for hours while people try to find them to hurt them. Imagine being herded into tunnels with the very people you think might also want to harm you? Everyone from the office holders to the janitors were negatively impacted by selfish deluded people who couldn’t stand the reality of losing an election, urged on by an egomaniac man child desperate to hold on to power. Everyone from office holders to janitors deserves a safe workplace. Workers rights are human rights.

The single-best comment on the Stupid Coup was, “This was an attempted workplace shooting.”
That really brings it home.

OMG – that bought up a visual I don’t even want to talk about.

I’ll wait to hear if any Republican staffers sign on before I get too excited about this effort.

Annie – I know that several staffers have resigned (especially the ones assigned to the Q-Representative), so I think it is likely to be bipartisan. But you’re right: until they do it is speculation.
