Dump Trump and the GOP

The House just sent the article of impeachment to the Senate.

Max Boot (The WaPo) makes a trenchant point:

“When the impeachment proceedings begin in the Senate, it will not be just Donald Trump in the dock. The entire Republican Party will be on trial. And there is every reason to believe that the GOP will fail this test — as it failed every other during the past four years.”

It will be the moment of truth, literally, when Republicans vote or do not vote to convict. The actual evidence of Trump saying, “Go tear down the Capitol” does not exist. Listening to his speech that day, you won’t hear a direct command to take hostages or destroy the building. Trump and his writers were careful about that, and I assume his legal team will present that in his defense.

His tone was definitely meant to inspire violence. New evidence of him scheming to overturn the vote in Georgia has come to light, as well as his coercion of the Georgia official over the phone. But will those things make the case?

I’m expecting the Republicans to vote no. If they didn’t convict him before, they won’t again. They may claim that he’s out of office now and this is just a Democratic revenge publicity stunt, they may say he didn’t actually tell the mob to riot, or they may say Trump got the group riled up but told them to back down.

They’re still afraid of him and the connections and loyalties he’s built. They see him forming a new coalition and coming after them in the primaries. They’re cowards and if they don’t convict him, they’re traitors. I’ll be happy to eat my words, but I don’t see a conviction.

Yup – the technique gets a mention in “Devil’s Advocate”.
“I never told them to shred all those documents. I just mentioned how much damning evidence was in them and let them make their own decisions.”

Having instigators like both Cruz and Hawley sit in as prospective jurors shows how much of a farce the whole issue has become. At the very least, those two need to be censured, but we all know #moscowmitch won’t allow it even though he is in the minority and Schumer doesn’t have the balls to demand such actions. The dims had to acquiesce to #moscowmitch’s demands of not touching the antiquated filibuster in order to be able to assign their rightful committee leadership positions. The antiquated senate needs to go.

I would abolish the anti-democratic (little dee) senate in a heartbeat if I was The King of the Forest. It was slave-state BS from the get-go.

I am entirely in favor of the D’s having presented this twice with the expectation that the R’s will have blocked it twice. At least make the R’s own it – again. There must be continuous attempts to reestablish the validity of true facts based on undeniable evidence before we have drowned in bullshit, its entirely up to the D’s to do that.

If nothing else, the trial will showcase the authoritarianism and complete moral bankruptcy of the GOP.
