Can anyone think of a better way to wrap up the Reign of Stupid than to promise millions of additional Trump-Virus vaccine doses that don’t exist?
Because both of the vaccines authorized for emergency use in the United States are two-dose regimens, the Trump administration’s initial policy was to hold back second doses to protect against the possibility of manufacturing disruptions. But that approach shifted in recent weeks, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter. These officials were told that Operation Warp Speed, which is overseeing the distribution of vaccines, stopped stockpiling second doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine at the end of last year. The last shots held in reserve of Moderna’s supply, meanwhile, began shipping out over the weekend.
[It] meant there was no stockpile of second doses waiting to be shipped, as Trump administration officials suggested this week. Azar, at a Tuesday briefing, said, “Because we now have a consistent pace of production, we can now ship all of the doses that had been held in physical reserve.” He explained the decision as part of the “next phase” of the nation’s vaccination campaign.
The coronavirus vaccine reserve was already depleted when Health Secretary Alex Azar announced that the 4th Reich would release all remaining doses. Instead of getting new shipments, the cupboard is bare. “Oops, my bad!,” Azar didn’t say.
Governors —who expected their vaccine supply would maybe double by next week— are now realizing they won’t be able to expand eligibility, you know, as a more contagious Trump-Virus mutant becomes the dominant strain in the US by March:
I’m actually stunned by this lie, and wonder why Azar did this. Was it incompetence or was it malfeasance so that Handsome Joe Biden will have yet another flaming bag of merde to stomp out?
By the way, this news broke on the day that Azar resigned. Pefect timing. Take a bow, Azar.
The WaPo tells us that Handsome Joe Biden has tapped former FDA chief David Kessler to lead the vaccine effort, which —sorry Trekkies— will no longer be called Operation Warp Speed.
“But the administration will still need ‘to move heaven and earth’ to hit Biden’s goal of 100 million vaccinations in the first 100 days, the president-elect said in a speech in Wilmington, Del., Friday afternoon that was calibrated to temper expectations. … Biden’s team envisions a billion-dollar national ad campaign … [T]he plan depends on convincing a divided and shellshocked Congress to quickly approve tens of billions more dollars for the effort. State and federal officials are also already grappling with a litany of challenges.”
Team Biden’s plan to speed up the rollout includes:
- adding vaccination sites in sports stadiums, community centers and churches
- encouraging states to ditch complicated tiers of eligibility (Thank Dawg for that!)
- ensuring that health departments are able to recruit workers to build-up their vaccination workforce
By the way, the U.S. reported 3,679 Covid-19 deaths and 244,000 new coronavirus cases Friday.
