Russia Hacks US Again (But this time they didn’t use Prznint Stupid)

Putin Rides Again

The department tasked with protecting the country from cyber attacks has itself been successfully hacked. Whoddathunkit?

Russian hackers broke into several government networks, including Homeland Security, Treasury, and Commerce departments, and you know, probably more. Vlad is pretty thorough.

From what I can tell, all of the systems were compromised by a server update by the firm SolarWinds. The breach allegedly is connected to a Russian attack on the cybersecurity firm FireEye that the company announced last week.

SolarWinds, which has hundreds of thousands of clients (including government agencies, defense contractors, and Fortune 500 companies) said on Monday that 18,000 of them were potentially vulnerable to the attack. I mentioned that Vlad is thorough, didn’t I?

The NYTimes tells us:

“The Trump administration acknowledged on Sunday that hackers acting on behalf of a foreign government—almost certainly a Russian intelligence agency, according to federal and private experts—broke into a range of key government networks, including in the Treasury and Commerce Departments, and had free access to their email systems. Officials said a hunt was on to determine if other parts of the government had been affected by what looked to be one of the most sophisticated, and perhaps among the largest, attacks on federal systems in the past five years.”

I’m assuming that Vlad has already told his favorite asset that Russia isn’t behind it, and you know, Prznint Stupid said, Okay! Just like that time he believed Vladimir Putin when the Russian president said the Kremlin did not interfere in the 2016 election, despite reports from U.S. intelligence communities saying otherwise.

Axios Alert as I was writing this:

🚨 Situational awareness: More federal agencies acknowledged being hit by “a hack engineered by one of Russia’s premier intelligence agencies” — Defense, State and Homeland Security, in addition to Treasury and Commerce. N.Y. Times

Wait for it- TRE45ON is gonna tweet about how it’s Biden’s fault. That if the EC had voted for him, this wouldn’t have happened.

The president-eject is still the best investment Putin ever made.

  3. Yeah this is a bad ‘un, the worst kind: a ‘supply chain’ attack. They were able to get their malware installed into Solarwinds’ updates, digitally signed by Solarwinds, so purportedly trusted, then installed and not detected for months. This is pretty much as bad as it gets, system security-wise.

Solarwinds also advises that due to the nature of their software, it’s advisable to exempt the programs from AV/Malware monitoring. This stuff sticks deep deep hooks into your network.

This was my morning reading yesterday,

and depressing reading it was, too; this is a really nasty piece of work, because even if you fix the exploit in solarwinds, you still don’t know where else you might be compromised; the tools they used could take control of any account in Active Directory, which means everything.

I work at one of those 18,000 customers of Solarwinds, fortunately it’s not running on our domain, so we’re not the ones who have spent the last 48 hours trying to figure out what has been compromised.

      BDR –

When I was reading this, I actually shuddered. Almost everything any organization or enterprise does is on a network of some kind, so pretty much everything was exposed. And that crap is going to be seeded everywhere for a very long time.

TG – according to many experts, ANY electronic computing device capable of communicating is vulnerable to being hacked, whether or not they’re EVER connected to a network, or have wi-fi capabilities.”

      Holy shit! That’s horrific.
I felt my heart sink while reading the details.

So, is this Vlad cleaning out the digital files while Trump is shredding the paper copies?

  5. Are you hinting the upgrades needed to get the government past Y2K never happened? Has WIN10 even come to all the government’s servers? Now I envision security from the best available from 1997!

    • Dennis Cole says:

Would you believe Windows 2000 is the predominant OS the feds are having the lackeys use? But not them, themselves, they’ve upgraded to Vista, at least.

      Naw, I don’t believe that shit, neither…….

They mostly did it to show us how easy it was, how far they’ve insinuated their reach and their grasp, how they installed their puppet, and he freely gave them all the intel they needed, to “invade us” without firing a shot, just like Khrushchev predicted all those years ago.

Tell me I’m wrong. Tell me this won’t have dire consequences further down the road.

I totes agree with BDR. This is as bad as it gets, and not only were we unprepared for it, TRUMP FIRED THE HEAD OF THE AGENCY that was supposed to prevent this shit from happening, just 1 month ago, and installed a lackey.

Now, I’m not saying Chad Wolf gave away the keys to the Cookie Store; I think he was installed to look the other way, after the dastardly deed had been set in motion. Krebs was not a tRump psychophant, and he was smart enough he could have least done something about it, even if it was just locking the barn, after all the horses inside were killed by the horrendous fire.

Yep, quite a conspiracy theory, ain’t it? How long do you think it will last in the furious newz cycle that’s the norm, in today’s world? While dumpf uck keeps blaring about the Stolen Election? Will our Gubmint continue to keep us posted about how badly they’ve been affected? How the steps they’ve taken have “eradicated any trace of this hack causing any further damage in the future, and we’re installing software in EVERY Gov’t computer that will completely prevent this from ever happening again.”

Rotsa ruck, right smack-dab inna middle of the transfer of preznential power, AND a pandemic, AND a major recession, AND millions of homeless, starving hordes…………

Makes me almost pray for a comet.
