The Supreme Court on Tuesday approved the Trump administration’s emergency application to stop Census field operations early while litigation over the once-a-decade count continues in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Why it matters: Civil rights groups fear that cutting off field operations now could lead to an undercount, which would affect how congressional seats are reapportioned.
(Scissorhead D-Cap notes, succinctly, that this ruling is the Supreme Court saying that minorities don’t count. And I will add: Literally.)
It’s a new way to steal elections if you can disappear the people from being represented. Next count will be in 10 years, and so yes, this is a big deal. Expect big states to “lose” some congressional seats.
