Happy Hour News Briefs

Memorial Day 2020 at Newport Beach, California
Axios breaking news is one of those chicken-or-the-egg things:
The doors of public schools are swiftly slamming shut for many Americans ahead of this next school year.
- Los Angeles and San Diego are starting out online-only this fall, forcing 825,000 students to learn with a laptop.
- California is also re-entering lockdown: Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered restaurants, wineries, movie theaters and other family entertainment to stop serving customers indoors, and he ordered bars to close in their entirety.
It’s hard to say which decision came first, right?
In general, this is good news for California, though it might not seem like it at first. Not all kids are going to have equal access to education. Not all of them have computers and internet access, and not all school districts are going to be able to pull this off the way LA Unified might be able to, but there’s an improved chance that families will not be exposed to the virus and keel over dead. In general I would say that’s a win.
Axios continues:
This could start a domino effect among officials who haven’t made a final decision, especially with the coronavirus surging across much of the U.S.
- It also sets up a conflict with the Trump administration and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who are pushing schools to have students in classrooms.
Unbelievably, Devos said she was unconcerned about exposing children to a pandemic on the Sunday Talkies.
…and TBogg, of course, nailed it:
Devos is a monster, Prznint Stupid is a monster. It’s impossible to me that parents are being put into this position. This is one of those times I really hope the ol’ rule of thumb is true: As goes California, the nation follows..
Right about now we could benefit from an active volcano inside the conterminous United States, so that conservatives would have a new hole to jump into, despite what crying liberals and the nanny state imperiously demand of the freedom-loving patriots who know that lava is a Democrat plot.

Pyroclastic flows usually roll faster than lava. And quickly bury all that lies in front of them. Think Pompeii and Vesuvius. It would be sweet to excavate rictus-faced Republicans, covered in tephra and volcanic bombs.

And since her family’s kids be attending private school in the Netherlands none of that 0.02% will be her kin. So, it really doesn’t matter how many children die horribly slow, agonizing deaths as their mothers watch helplessly from the other side of a window, now does it?

So if your kid has to be separated from you later and placed in a hospital ICU – well its not like that’s a cage in a warehouse or anything. Loathsome pile of shit.

Betsy’s plan is simple: rich white parents don’t want the risk of virus, so their kids get vouchers for charter or private or parochial schools, freeing up the classrooms for poor kids or immigrant children, where the virus will do it’s worst, as Betsy intends.
She is a monster.

she is inherently evil. I am constantly surprise at how cartoonishly evil she is.

not even. Kids of rich parents will continue to have private tutoring, and never have to rub up against dirty normals.

Please don’t underestimate the Trumpistas’ urge to destroy public education! Actually, don’t underestimate their urges to destroy all education . . .

We’ve noted for years that the GOP wants to privatize education and destroy teachers unions.
We agree with you, this is all part of their master plan.

I wouldn’t say it is PART of their master plans, because they are all idiots, but will say that their shits are perfectly willing to take advantage of a crisis to break public schools, as part of their ongoing effort to break every fucking thing else in our country.

As zombies, we wait to feast on their livers, large and fatty, and their kidneys. We will not eat their brains, because they are obviously diseased and we will toss them to the rats.

Her malevolent incompetence and sense of entitlement are matched only by her epic stupidity. She’s the perfect Trump cabinet appointee.

When they closed schools in the spring, COVID rates were a fraction of what they are now. There’s no way they can make the case that it’s safe to go back to school. Not without lying through their teeth. Given the choice between life and dollars, the “Right to Life” party goes for the dough every time.

The only good thing about this malignant administration is all the satirical art it has inspired, from Sarah Cooper’s performances to visuals like these.
