They are, however capable of well timed sighs.
Many moons ago we had my wife’s father (who was deeply in love with his own voice and the “sage” advice he gave everyone(whether requested or not) watch our dogs.
When we got back we were hanging out in our living room, he went into one of his oft-told stories, and right on cue Cicely (a large, part ridgeback) sighed mightily…
“Not THIS story again!”

I have a foster-fail rescue that chuffs at my dad when we goes on and on. It’s hilarious.
I love your turn of phrase when referring to your wife’s father.
Sounds like Cicely was a character…smart.

She was a character and a great dog. I think I described her once as either a very strange dog or an alien from Arcturus.
Or, the pup fell a sleep on his head. I had a baby Fox Terrier do this exact thing, looked just like the picture except he did it on carpet (schmarrrt!)
