‘Oops,’ Said Faceberg (Part Infinity)

CNBC:

  • Starbucks is the latest company to say it will pause advertising on “all social media platforms” and promises to have discussions internally and with media partners and civil rights organizations to stop the spread of hate speech. The company will continue to post on social media without paid promotion.
  • Starbucks said though it is pausing advertising, it isn’t joining the #StopHateForProfit boycott campaign, which kicked off earlier this month.
  • Coca Cola on Friday also said it would pause advertising on all social media platforms globally, while Unilever is halting advertising on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in the U.S. through Dec. 31.
  • On Saturday, spirits giant Diageo said it will be pausing paid advertising globally on “major social media platforms” beginning in July.

Starbucks is the latest major advertiser to make such an announcement amid a boycott that began with Facebook but is now hitting other social media platforms. Coca Cola on Friday also said it would pause advertising on all social media platforms globally, while Unilever is halting advertising on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in the U.S. through Dec. 31. On Saturday, spirits giant Diageo said it will be pausing paid advertising globally on “major social media platforms” beginning in July. A Starbucks spokesman said this social media pause will not include YouTube, which is owned by Google.

It’s a start, right?

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but each time that Faceberg says that it is too difficult to moderate hate speech, I think about what Pinterest did: they make a keyword list of words and terms that makes anti-vaxing messages (amongst others) un-findable; Pinterest doesn’t have to moderate every post looking for that stuff, they made sure it cannot be found.

Facebook and Twitter could do exactly the same thing.

I don’t know (nor do I care) what Faceberg’s politics are (though I’m pretty sure like most tech bro psychopaths he’s a libertarian), but he “owns” the world’s largest media platform; Facebook should be regulated as such. It’s insane that it isn’t.

“Now, now..” said Howard Shultz, “..let’s not biicker and quibble about ‘ooo killed ‘ooo under color of law, or what kinds of demographics we offer our acidic refinery wastes fine coffee and coffee-like products to. Even violent racists need their morning Vente Grande About How The Mud People Are Destroying the Pure White Aryan Race. Everyone can come together with a kumbaya pumkin spice latte! Profit is good!”

I run an ad blocker that makes their ads disappear. But even without that, it is an easy solution to avoid purchasing anything advertised on FB. Just don’t.
