How a Pandemic Prediction Program Ended

Two months before the novel coronavirus is thought to have begun its deadly advance in Wuhan, China, the Trump administration ended a $200-million pandemic early-warning program aimed at training scientists in China and other countries to detect and respond to such a threat.

The project, launched by the U.S. Agency for International Development in 2009, identified 1,200 viruses that had the potential to erupt into pandemics, including more than 160 novel coronaviruses. The initiative, called PREDICT, also trained and supported staff in 60 foreign laboratories — including the Wuhan lab that identified SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Field work ceased when the funding ran out in September, and organizations that worked on the PREDICT program laid off dozens of scientists and analysts, said Peter Daszak, president of EcoHealth Alliance, a key player in the program.

On Wednesday, USAID granted an emergency extension to the program, issuing $2.26 million over the next six months to send experts who will help foreign labs squelch the pandemic. But program leaders say the funding will do little to further the initiative’s original mission.

“Look at the name: Our efforts were to predict this before it happens. That’s the part of the program that was exciting — and that’s the part I’m worried about,” Daszak said.

Hey Grover Norquist, your life’s work is complete, you drowned the gubmint in the bathtub but now you must bury the bodies.

Scientists? We don’t need no stinking scientists! We have Jared, who gets smarter by the minute, and his wife’s daddy, who already knows what the scientists know because of his uncle and his own big, beautiful brain.

Why do I keep getting this eerie feeling that all of this is part of a “Master Plan,” all the confusion & delays, the misinformation, the “foolish actions,” (like keeping the FL beaches open), the blase attitude of our topmost “Leaders.”

This dismantling of only certain programs, followed by a crushing need for them, the refusal to impose strict regulations, like distancing, only to finally give in leads me to think there’s some kind of conspiracy akin to Agenda 21. Or, what’s worse, this is all being done to us as a sort of social experiment, to see if they could “cull the herd,” and sharply reduce the number of frail, elderly, or poor citizens – you know, the ones who are the “Takers,” who are a “drag on Society,” and not paying their fair share.

If you think, or are reminded of everything our Gov’t has done prior to this, (in the name of Science), that has been more than just a bit sketchy, (like forced sterilization, or infecting a “certain group” with Syphilis,) then a conspiracy theory like this is not so far-fetched.

If so, then the main reason they’re having such a difficult time with this, is that the “Main Players” are not too bright, and it often seems like they’re not particularly sticking to the “script.”

    • Also, these folks cannot keep from blabbing, or butt-dialing, or going off reservation.

It’s getting to be a narrower squeeze, but I think we still can (mostly) confidently ascribe to incompetence, rather than malice this stuff.

The alternative is to descend into madness, like my BIL who has regaled me with his deeply researched tales of how Jim JOnes was a CIA plant who faked his death in order to …well, at this point the narrative gets a wee bit opaque. so “reasons”

He’s serious about it, even has a self-published book on the thing and all. I cannot take him for very long when gets onto this…
