A recent Washington Post-Ipsos poll found that nearly two-thirds of African Americans believe it is a bad time to be a black person in the United States. I would like to know when it was a good time to be a black person here, but I digress.
The poll also found that 80% believe that Prznint Stupid has made it worse.
Imma white kid who came of age during the Reagan Era and I know enough to know that I’m part of the problem. I remember dancing to:
…which may be the strangest way to have become deeply aware of Martin Luther King Jr., but it was the way that got me to the library to read the speeches, and trust me: not much got me to the library in those days. The man had a way with words.
I don’t think it matters much how you got to MLK Jr, but it does matters a lot that you do. I hope all of us think about the black experience in America, not just today but every day. That horrific poll is a real slap upside the head for all of us that our work to become A More Perfect Union is far, far from over.
