Scissorhead Fran alerts us to a new front on the war on immigration, and while at first it might seem strange, there is a kind of cunning long game being played. See if you can spot it!
The genealogy boom hits a roadblock as the Trump administration plans huge fees for immigration records (The WaPo)
Essentially, the fees charged to access old records will go up nearly 500% per pop. The WaPo says that what normally cost an outrageous $130 Ameros would raise to astronomical $635 Ameros, just to access what one reasonably might assume is your own damn history.
The new rule that changes the fees is being proposed by ICE, which currently is being run by notable white people enthusiast Ken Cucinelli as the acting director, no doubt with an assist by Hair Füror’s pocket Nazi Stephan Miller. So right away, your hackles should be up when the would-be Gestapo gets the ol’ gang back together.
So why would they do that? What purpose does it serve? So what is the game, you ask? Here’s a hint:
To put it bluntly, they are erasing history by making it unavailable.
And as our own stories of immigration becomes unknown (or unknowable), the argument that we are all immigrants in this land will be forgotten. Why would white nationalists like Miller want to erase history of Jews fleeing Nazi Germany? I cannot imagine./snark
Also: what if you are first or second generation, could you prove your own immigration status? What if the documentation for it was unavailable? There’s no end to the fuckery with the Fourth Reich, so this might seem innocuous to us, just some typical price gouging like a common Devos student loan, but what if it is something bigger? This is a generational war, we might not even know we are in it, and somewhere, Stephan Miller is smiling.
You can comment on the rule here. The cut-off-date is December 16. Even if you are not a genealogist (I’m certainly not!), I think it is important for our nation to keep our own family stories around.
