“Several senators told the New York Times in a report published this week they spoke to the president about reducing the costs of the federal health care and retirement programs — a move that would likely stir controversy in a presidential election season.
“Republicans have said cutting both programs is crucial to reducing the nation’s deficit, which has ballooned under Mr Trump thanks, in part, to the GOP tax bill passed in 2017.”
Okay, that bit of treachery is entirely predictable. It’s what Republicans do: destroy the economy (via wars, tax cuts, grifting us into recessions) and demand Democrats fix it. Rinse. Repeat. We’ve seen this since The Feast of Saint Ronnie.
The LATimes has an opinion piece written by the somewhat libertarian Tom Campbell, who breaks the debt down:
“Twenty-one cents of every dollar the federal government spends is borrowed, and that will remain true for the next 10 years (the outer boundary of the CBO estimate).
“These annual deficits add to the total debt the federal government owes. As a nation, we owe $22 trillion today, of which $6 trillion is owed to federal trust funds, like Social Security. At the end of the next decade, we’ll have added another $12 trillion. The debt owed to the public is now 79% of our nation’s annual gross domestic product. In 10 years, CBO estimates, it will hit 95%, the highest percentage of GDP it has been since World War II.”
In other words, the politicians, mostly Republicans, raided Social Security to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy over the years, and the Republicans intend to do it again. The op-ed has a some foreign policy implications with China (they own us and might decide to call in their chips over Taiwan, it seems) and obviously Tariffman’s Trade Wars.
Back to Yahoo:
“Senator John Barrasso, a Republican from Wyoming, described the process of cutting the costs of social security and medicare to the New York Times as “best done during divided government”.
“We want the Democrats to take the blame,” Barrasso didn’t add with a wink.
“We’ve brought it up with President Trump,” he added, “who has talked about out it being a second-term project.”
It’s amazing that these Republicans are saying this aloud.
“Yes, but what about Possum Hollar?,” you ask. And I will answer: So what? Comrade Stupid will not be up for re-election after 2020 (he’ll declare hisselft Supreme Leader for Life), and eff Possum Hollar and his mouth-breather base.
The Final Solution from the Republicans is to eliminate the social safety net. Though it is nothing but a rounding error for their donor class, on principle they don’t want any of their ill-gotten gains to go to the poors.
Everything else in the Republican platform is smoke and mirrors and the Culture Wars are a means to an end. Sure Y’all Qaeda cares about abortion, but the mistresses and daughters of the plutocrats can always take Daddy’s jet to europe and go shopping afterwards.
The Big Screw is coming if Prznint Stupid wins in 2020. Bank on it.
