China Democracy Protests

“Y’all remember that time Ah whar in China-r? Good times!”

Regular readers and good Scissorheads know that we do not (generally) comment on international politics. It is not our wheelhouse (as the kids don’t say anymore) and as is frequently pointed out to me, I know nothing about nothing. (Fact Check: True!) But when has that ever stopped us?

That said, this story in Politico about the democracy protests in China caught my eye:

“Lawmakers and government officials across Washington, including some of President Donald Trump’s top advisers, are growing increasingly alarmed about the unrest in Hong Kong.

“One person, however, seems less concerned than most: Trump.”

I’m shocked.

The article says that some in China are suspicious that the US is behind the protests, which I find sweetly naive considering that Hair Füror is doing everything he can domestically to destroy democracy here, and that he loves a strongman dictator and seeks out their approving gaze.

“Trump has so far stayed relatively blasé about the Asian crisis, telling reporters on Tuesday: “The Hong Kong thing is a very tough situation. I hope it works out peacefully. I hope nobody gets hurt. I hope nobody gets killed.”

Now, most normal prznints would have a contingency plan, but as we’ve noted since—(checks notes)—forever, Comrade Stupid is not normal.

“At the White House, however, aides to Trump, including his economic advisers, are watching events closely and worry that it could spiral out of control, according to a current and a former White House official. It’s not clear what, if anything, Trump wants to do in response, the sources said.

“The official acknowledged that Trump appears less interested in the matter than the trade negotiations with China. But he said aides around the president were used to the way he prioritizes such things.”

Oh, dear.

Let’s keep an eye on this thing, as it could escalate quickly. No one in the 4th Reich is capable of diplomacy, and Trump is not a defender of democracy (only capitalism) so this whole situation could go south really fast.

  2. trump fundamentally doesn’t give a fuck about how people in other countries are treated, shithole or otherwise; this is a huge component of his world view. His world view is cartoonishly limited to viewing countries as the personification of their leaders. It certainly how he sees OUR country. He’s the President so America is HIS POSSESSION It’s why he blows up alliances, embraces ‘tough’ dictators, why he believes tariffs are paid by other countries. It’s always personal with him.

China isn’t a vast country with a billion plus people. It’s a splotch on a vast map with Xi Jingpin standing on it. Brazil is a splotch with Bolsonaro, Venezuela a splotch with Maduro, etc. This is part and parcel of his deep affinity for authoritarian leaders, because they really ARE the personification of the government. He sees how the people of North Korea fawn over Kim Jong Il and he thinks this is how EVERYONE should behave. It’s why he hates criticism, why he loves adulation of the MAGAt’s, it’s why he mercurially changes policy by tweet, or has to brag how “The US (meaning He) has a nuclear cruise missile that’s better than Putin’s.”

The media continues to spill ink over something so obvious: trump doesn’t give a fuck about anyone or anything beyond his shitty “brand” and his only concern is the money to be made off of that brand. He will never be ‘presidential’ nor make that pivot. He is a vulgar, sullen prick that yells at said media for the entertainment of idiots. Sadly, that is the low bar that will be precedent and if the dims don’t get their shit together and work on the schism within the party, fat nixon will be anointed for another term and the next guy will be even worse.

FatNixon is less concerned than most because the unrest in Hong Kong doesn’t have his name on it.

Wonkette has a couple of decent splainers up about the gist seems to be that an agreement between Hong Kong and China does NOT (!) allow extradition from Hong Kong.. In return, Hong Kong has been acting as a legal port for sales for decades. And war was averted.

Now China wants to allow extraditions again, but protests have been going on for days.
Trump is repeating his third favorite dictator’s line that it is rioters, but other than that sounds like he doesn’t have a clue what is going on. He just repeats all his “many people are saying” style shite. Here’s a quote:
“The Hong Kong thing is a very tough situation, very tough. We’ll what see what happens. But I’m sure it’ll work out. I hope it works out for everybody, including China, by the way.”
Seriously, he has no fkn clue.
Here is another one. You should go look at this one, if only for the neat tricks for dealing with tear gas and pepper gas. You never know when you’ll need to use these life hacks.
