Not sure if it’s the reason here, but cats will do that – lie down on their backs in a submissive pose, as if they’re surrendering. BUT! If the aggressor thinks he has an advantage, it’s exactly what the supine cat is looking for: if the aggressor climbs on top, the cat beneath can then pull her back legs up, and begin “rabbit-kicking” the cat on top, with claws full extended, often eviscerating it.
I’ve seen this happen a time or two, and my own cat will do it to me when we’re “wrasslin,” and at that point, I have to be VERY careful in how I withdraw. Got some wicked scars to prove it, lol.
That orange cat is surrounded – or at least has another cat at his back.
It does look like they have been practicing to play cowboy movies, though.
