Worst. Bond Villain. Ever. (Part Infinity)

Living typo Steve Mnuchin and his villainess wife, Craven Moorehead

Earlier this month, House Ways and Means Committee chairman Richard Neal formally asked the IRS to provide six years of Prznint McGrifter’s personal tax returns, and the returns of some of his bidnesses, to Democrats who are investigating his financial dealings and possible conflicts of interest. Allegedly, there are many!

Today is the deadline that Neal set for the IRS to turn them over.

The White House suggested it would put Strategic Hire AG Bill ‘Low’ Barr on the case, and (acting) chief-of-staff Mick Mulvaney told Fox News viewers there will be ice cream in hell before the Dims would ever see his tax returns.

In the quaint, real world, the White House, the AG, Mulvaney, even Prznint Stupid hisself don’t have a say in this. The only person who does is Treasury Secretary and living typo Steven Mnuchin, who is ready to prove to da boss that he is a mensch. “Steve ‘the mensch’ Mnuchin has a nice ring to it, huh, Donnie, huh?,” he didn’t fawn. Probably.

In testimony before two different House committees, Mnuchin said that he did not expect to meet the deadline. In his testimony, Mnuchin also told us that his toadies and minions had consulted with White House counsel Pat Cipollone. Unethical, certainly; illegal probably, but you know: mensch. Can’t touch that, as MC Hammer once sang.

“See you in court!,” Mnuchin didn’t sneer.

But he did sneer at Auntie Maxine:

Anyway, back to the matter at hand. Vox interviewed bunch of law professors, and they unanimously agreed that Prznint Stupid didn’t have an orange leg to stand on, legally speaking. The 1924 law is as straight forward as can be.

As we know lawyers argue the facts of the case, when the facts are on their side. When the facts are NOT on their side, they argue the law.

Watch that space.

We expect to see all sorts of pontificating poltroons declare that it is unconstitutional and a power grab. Neal, who is not a dummy, laid out the case for both oversight and legislation in his letter to the IRS, and those are the jobs of Congress, so asking for tax returns is not a power grab or unconstitutional. Anyay, expect this to get to those unelected men in black robes (and women – why do Republicans always forget that there are women?) to weigh in. Probably after ‘skis with Squi.

So here’s how it will probably play out: it will be dragged out until after the 2020 Goat Rodeo. If Putin wins a second term, then Chief Justice John Roberts gets to be a tie breaker; if Putin loses, well, Comrade Trump’s tax returns are probably moot.

  1. We no longer live under the rule of law, but the rule of man. Trump’s minions have declared it illegal, and his minions will refuse to follow the law, and the greased slide to absolute fascist dictatorship tilts up another couple of degrees.

    Yeah, been saying exactly that.
    Which means they win, right?
Been saying that, too. They’re going to say “fuck you” to all the House Committees, they’re not going to release tax returns, they’re not going to release a meaningfully unredacted Mueller report, nobody of consequence is ever going to be indicted and held accountable, and fired functionaries who bailed out (Ryan, Flake etc), or who were shitcanned and thrown under the bus (Sessions, Nielson etc) will eventually get juicy sinecures in the Power and Privilege Loyalty Rewards Program.
Meanwhile, more horror show distractions at the border and who knows what else. If Netanyahoo can get re-elected by goosing religious and racist/xenophobic fears while actually being under formal investigation for corruption, does anyone really think Trump can’t be? Or even if he isn’t, that the court-packing program won’t pay off?

No. The fear and loathing (he was a neighbor, and a major league asshole in many ways, but we miss him) is too deep and fully crystallized now. There is no medicine, this will just have to play out to it’s unavoidably disastrous ends.
The fact that most Americans don’t want that outcome, nor do they want fascist policies to prevail in their national politics, is fucking irrelevant, a reality that people like Trump and others in the world of Power and Privilege understand intuitively and that liberals simply can’t seem to fathom at all, otherwise they would have been out in the streets when there was still a chance of it being effective instead of fucking around making phone calls to people who pretend they listen.

Not sure if this rant is a result of a reasoned conclusion or an emotional response to watching another gray, bleak and windy snowstorm outside. Probably some of both.

OK, I’m outtahere, and shutting off the ‘net. Used up all my bandwidth for this cycle already trying to keep up with this shit, so I’ll be throttled back to dialup speeds for the next couple of weeks.

Why can’t Neal surround himself with FBI agents, and/or US Marshalls, and march right into whatever building houses the records, and then proceed to find the records and either copy them, or take them with him, once the deadline passes, and they continue to refuse to comply? THAT would be upholding the Law, while the Treasury Dep’t. is guilty of violating it.

      DC –

It’s the much vaunted checks and balances again. The Capitol Police (which is under the jurisdiction of Congress) could hand over a subpoena or something, but I don’t think that there is a way to storm the Bastille, so to speak. And besides, the Executive Branch has a lot more firepower if it came to that.

No this will drag out through the usual channels in a game that is rigged with the courts being sacked and stacked by ampy be-chinned Mitch.
